Book Review

The Girl from the Mill by Chrissie Walsh.

What a page turner. I thoroughly enjoyed reading through the pages of this book. My favorite character, Lacey, was a force to reckon with. I enjoyed reading about her life.

The author made each character in this book have a unique role, and I am pleased at the interconnectedness between the plot, suspense, and characters. I am on the hunt for more of this author’s book. I even learned a lot from the fictional characters. Indeed, war is dreadful, but how you make up for it is a choice.

The grammar, writing style, title, and book cover are well illustrated and easy to comprehend. I couldn’t help finishing this book past my bedtime.

Overall, I am recommending this book to lovers of historical fiction saga. This book is worth 5 stars. I voluntarily reviewed this book. the opinions expressed in this review are mine.

My Review

This book had me hooked from the first page down to the last page. The author writes amazingly and covered the themes of child abuse, race, sex trafficking, murder, fame, stardom, and justice system thoroughly in the book. It felt real flipping page after page of this fictional novel.

I picked up this book because of its cover. I love the picture, and the book title “Grown” inscribed between her earring hoop made me curious. The main character “Enchanted ” tells a story that pulls the reader deep into the plot. The suspense, plot twists, and grammar were easy to understand . Korey Fields represent many things in society, and it is our duty to protect young girls. I love Gab in the book. I am doing my best not to give out spoilers but read this book if you are a female, have female friends , daughters, sisters, family. This book is an eye opener especially for young girls who are yet to see the world.

I reviewed a personal hardcover copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are mine.

My Review

The Convent Girl by Tania Crosse

What a book indeed. This is the first of Tania Crosse books I have read, and I admire her imagination and descriptive prowess. I appreciate how she laced true events with history. She mentioned at the end of the book that some characters were based on the lives of people she knew.

War is terrible, and it was sad reading through the horrors and devastations of war. The survivors must be shaken to think that their whole livelihood gone up in flames. The main character, Maisie, was interesting to read, and my heart went out to her severally in the plot.

Regardless, there were happy moments and beautiful characters. I learned new words, new knowledge, and some places in this book. I was surprised to discover that this book is the 10th book of 10 series, but I read it as a standalone without feeling left out.

The book cover and title are attention grabbing. Although some pages were long due to the overly description of the war or equipment, they didn’t take away the main plot.

I am rating this book 4 stars. I recommend you to read the book. I voluntarily reviewed this book. Opinions expressed in this review are mine.

Author’s Bio

Tania was born in London and lived in Banbury Street, Battersea, which is the setting for her two London titles. However, at a very young age the family moved to Surrey where Tania’s love of the countryside took root. She always enjoyed reading and has composed stories ever since she could hold a pen. After studying French Literature at university, she devoted twenty years to bringing up her family. But her passion for writing never left her, and side by side with her in-depth research into Victorian social history, she began to pen her novels in earnest as her family grew up.

When Tania discovered Morwellham Quay, the restored Victorian copper port in Devon, she fell in love with this magical place and felt a spiritual compulsion to create a story that would illustrate life there in times gone by. This led to the publication of her debut novel, ‘Morwellham’s Child’, recently republished as The Harbour Master’s Daughter, and now Tania has fourteen published titles with which to thrill her readers.

Tania has now written an entire series of novels illustrating the rich history of Tavistock and the surrounding area of Dartmoor from Victorian times to the 1950’s. Having completed a series of Twentieth Century stories set in London and the south east, she has now returned to Devon for her future novels. She draws very much on her own experiences of life to create her books. She hates being catagorised as a writer of historical romance. The history comes first, she insists, and the human tales develop from her research. The characters lead harsh, demanding lives and their stories are often cruel and harrowing.

Tania has been happily married for fifty years and claims she would never have achieved her success without her husband’s support. They have three grown-up children, two grandchildren, and three grand-dogs!

BOOK REVIEW: THE SECRET LIVES OF CHURCH LADIES BY DEESHA PHILYAW.

Genre: Black and African American Women’s Fiction

Publisher: West Virginia University Press

Publication Date: September 1, 2020

Books can be purchased online and at local libraries.

Book Blurb

The Secret Lives of Church Ladies explores the raw and tender places where Black women and girls dare to follow their desires and pursue a momentary reprieve from being good. The nine stories in this collection feature four generations of characters grappling with who they want to be in the world, caught as they are between the church’s double standards and their own needs and passions.

There is fourteen-year-old Jael, who has a crush on the preacher’s wife. At forty-two, Lyra realizes that her discomfort with her own body stands between her and a new love. As Y2K looms, Caroletta’s “same time next year” arrangement with her childhood best friend is tenuous. A serial mistress lays down the ground rules for her married lovers. In the dark shadows of a hospice parking lot, grieving strangers find comfort in each other.

With their secret longings, new love, and forbidden affairs, these church ladies are as seductive as they want to be, as vulnerable as they need to be, as unfaithful and unrepentant as they care to be, and as free as they deserve to be.

Book Review

I picked up this book from my school’s library because I was curious about the book title. I read this book in two sittings despite my busy schedule and I have many thoughts about this book.

The Secret Lives of Church Ladies has 9 short stories in the collection and each story stands independently of each other. My favourite short stories are Peach Cobbler and Not-Daniel. I was curious to know what happened to the characters after following up the plot.

I must commend the author’s attempt at suspense and captivating plot. Some characters had an invisible pull that makes the reader eager to flip page after page. I agree that some stories were not my type but the good ones were there to rescue me.

Overall, this is a remarkable book and the first book that addressed reality without sugar-coating it. It has various themes such as love, sex, selfishness, hardships, betrayal etc. It is a book that I would rate 4 stars.

I borrowed a paperback copy of this book from my school’s library, opinions expressed in this review are mine.

The Hidden Prince by Tessa Afshar.

Such a sweet and delightful book. I finished it few minutes after 3 AM. I couldn’t help flipping page after page reading through the lives of amazing loveable characters.

Book Review

Shield of the Sky by Susan Krinard.

I was drawn into the pages by the author. This book is unlike any book I have read before. I tried to classify the genre while reading but the pages had my attention.

There are two books in the series. Book one introduced us to the characters and the deadly adventures they had. It was the war of good and evil. I had favourites in the book. Tahvo, Rhenna and Cian.

The plot was so great I had to get book two so fast.

Hammer of the Earth.

This is book two of the series. I enjoyed reading the book as I followed the adventures of the characters on a mission against evil ; the Stone God.

New characters were introduced and the suspense were building a deep crescendo in my head. I devoured each page hungrily while rooting for my characters.

I got to the last page and I must confess, I was disappointed that there was not any book three. I could not believe the book ended there. I am suffering from book hangover. These series really grabbed my utmost attention.

Susan Krinard did an excellent job with her series.

I voluntarily reviewed the books. Opinions expressed in this review are mine.
