Lyndsey Lewellen grew up on a healthy dose of comic books, punk music, and sci-fi. She infuses all three loves into novels written for young adults. Inside her “what if” worlds, her characters take risks, grow, and fight for what matters. When she’s not writing or whittling down her endless TBR, she designs novel covers and paints on shoes. Teen girls in my youth group hear these words often. Maybe that’s because the simplest words are sometimes the hardest to define—and even harder to live out. So, we talk about them a lot. In fact, we go over their meanings so often that when our church’s youth pastor asked the main group to define grace one Wednesday night, girl after girl turned to look at me sitting in the back. They knew the answer. I was proud.

But knowing that justice is getting what you deserve, mercy is not getting what you deserve, and grace is getting what you don’t deserve is only half the battle. The real challenge? Learning when—and how—to apply them.

MY REVIEW

Another epic adventure in this series draws fans of dystopia to grab a copy of this book. I remember reading the other in this series and wasn’t sure if I could wait long to find out the conclusion. It is not hard to accept that this story could happen with your imagination. I loved the setting of Texas and the grit behind the characters.

Oh yes the action is phenomenal and the author does an excellent job of keeping readers on their toes. I felt like I was in the book walking alongside our main characters. They are determined to survive when surrounded by technology that is beyond what I could imagine. What would it be like to live in this world created by the author?

There is a bit of romance that doesn’t take away from the story which I appreciated. One thing is evident in this gripping adventure . God is definitely in this story and we see characters who want to follow and obey Him. Be sure and get your copy to see how dealing with your past will lead to freedom as you allow God to direct your path and trust Him in any circumstance.

June 23, 1914

Perfect husbands were rare, except perhaps in fiction, but Grace Percy, Countess of Astley, had married the real-life equivalent, she was certain.

“I still cannot believe this surprise, Frederick!” Grace’s shock had continued all the way from the harbor, where her dear husband had announced that they’d arrived in America instead of England. “I thought the terrain looked different than England, but I never suspected we’d go anywhere else except your beloved Havensbrooke.”

“Our beloved Havensbrooke, I hope?” he corrected, turning from his place in the front seat of the hired touring, next to a rather somber driver.

Her smile immediately responded. At nearly seven months married, Grace still found her thoughts paused on occasion at the idea of his English estate being her home. But how could she help it? They’d only lived in the estate a few months before they’d taken off on their honeymoon tour. But oh, what a delightful introduction to her new home, complete with a murder mystery and a ghost hunt.

She sighed. Married life certainly kept proving to be wonderfully exciting.

She sent him another grin before tipping her head out the window just enough to take in the familiar lane leading to her father’s house. “How did you even know where to go? Harrington is such a small place outside of Richmond, and I know I’ve never given you exact directions.”

His low chuckle warmed the already heated June air, skittering a familiar welcome of tickles up her bare neck. “I’ve written my own letters to your father, darling.” His voice, so smooth and English, carried such delicious tenderness that Grace turned to find him shooting a wink to their adopted daughter, Zahra.

Zahra’s lips tipped. She rarely showed great affection, but who could blame her? After losing her family and living on the streets of Cairo, the little girl still had plenty of healing to do. So every smile came extra special.

Poor Miss Cox, the young English maid Frederick had hired in Italy to accompany them through the remainder of their trip, blushed at Frederick’s wink and smile. After all the overt affection Grace lathered on her darling husband, it was a wonder Miss Cox hadn’t gotten used to it yet, but perhaps the trouble lay more in how very handsome her husband was.

Grace thought about that idea for a moment. She supposed if she wasn’t married to this wonderful man, she’d find herself a little awestruck too.

Truth be told, he was so handsome, he might fit the description of a dime-novel villain, but she was very glad fiction didn’t get it right on that score either.

“Besides, it may be a while before we can travel again.” He continued, turning back to face the front of the car. “I know it’s a few months earlier than we’d originally planned, but it seemed a waste not to take advantage of being at sea. And I know you’d love to see your family.”

Grace would have kissed his cheek if she hadn’t been sitting in the back seat of the touring with Zahra between her and Miss Cox. “You are the most wonderful man.” She turned to Zahra and Miss Cox. “Don’t you think so?”

Miss Cox’s eyes widened, and she quickly looked away, but Zahra’s grin stretched enough to show off her teeth. The simple white dress she wore brought out the depths of those endless gray-green eyes. Grace still couldn’t stop smiling at the very idea that the little girl belonged to her and Frederick now.

“He has all his hair and teeth.” Zahra nodded, the tiniest twinkle in her eyes alerted Grace that the little girl might be finding her humor. “That is a help.”

Frederick’s laugh burst out. “Indeed it is, Zahra. And I’m glad to still possess both of them.”

Grace studied his thick dark hair for a second longer, her fingers twitching to push through his locks, but the very idea could send poor Miss Cox through the car window. Grace drew in a deep breath to keep her show of admiration to a more appropriate public display and leaned toward Zahra. “The gardens at Rutledge House are lovely, Zahra. They were my mother’s gardens, and I’d often spend time with her there. Hopefully, when we return to our dear Havensbrooke”—she emphasized, sending her dear husband a look to ensure her noted her correction—“you and I and, perhaps even Lily, can work to restore those gardens together. Then we can make our own special place too. Gardens are very creative places in stories as well as in real life.”

MY REVIEW

This book is witty, mystery filled and a fun read. I enjoyed following Grace and Frederick on their latest journey. Their marriage seems to be rock solid which a family member is jealous of. Oh yes there is that green eyed monster running throughout the story which fuels deceit, greed and anger.

I liked how Frederick wanted to surprise Grace with a trip before venturing off on their honeymoon. Things don’t go well when they walk into a murder scene featuring Grace’s sister. Lillias is not very friendly even though Grace wants to help her sister clear her name. Who killed Lillias’s husband?

The mystery grows deeper when the sisters are summoned to Scotland to claim an inheritance. They both must be there there for this to take place, but there is a little hiccup. With unique detective skills Grace and Frederick race to try to clear Lillias name while trying to stay out of danger.

The author delivers a clever mystery which had me trying to read faster. I like how Grace and Frederick embrace their new marriage with faith and trust. A beautiful story that captures the meaning of family. With humor along the way this book paves the way to a delightful look at embracing redemption and new relationships.

Do you ever wish you could turn back time? That’s what I recently got to do, as I read through my very first published novel, The Bartered Bride, that is now being re-released by Wild Heart Books.

What a blast from the past. I was amazed at all the feelings that rushed back in as I revisited Duluth, MN in the last century. Melissa and Jonathan hadn’t changed a bit in sixteen years.

The story idea first came to me as I sat in church awaiting the start of the service. There I was, a not-yet-published-author, minding my own business when the plot sort of burst into my head. An arranged marriage set in Duluth, and using the “Gales of November” and the wreck of the Mataafa…

I jotted down a few notes, because face it, the best idea for a novel could pop into my head, and if I don’t write down the gist, I will forget it in two minutes.

I wrote The Bartered Bride in about six weeks, and I sent it through my critique group of the time. Then my agent submitted it to the publisher in the spring of 2008.

And we waited.

And waited.

We heard nothing for months. My agent sent word that the publisher was still considering it, and I was to be patient. It wasn’t a no, but it also wasn’t a resounding yes!

I had already started the sequel to The Bartered Bride, a story called Marriage Masquerade, so I finished that one, and then with summer upon me, I wrote a new story, Clara and the Cowboy, about an heiress to a ranch and one of the cowboys who rode for her father. Maybe the publisher would like that series better. I heard nothing all summer on either of the two series I had proposed and submitted.

Then in September of that year, I went to the American Christian Fiction Writers Conference. The conference was being held in Minnesota, just a hop up the road from where I live. I ferried agents and editors from the airport to the hotel, I met people, I sat in workshops, all the time wondering if I would ever be a published author. Would my writing ever be ‘good enough’? Was I wasting my time?

Imagine my surprise when the publisher to whom I had submitted The Bartered Bride took the stage at a general session and announced that they were offering a contract to me for that book! Not only that, but when I had an appointment with the editor later, she offered not only a three-book contract on the The North Star Brides, but an additional three-book contract for the Brides of Money Creek of which Clara and the Cowboy was book one!

I had sold six books! The rest of the conference, you could have bought me for a dollar.

Melissa and Jonathan will always have a special place in my heart. They were the couple that started it all. I’m so glad they are getting a new start, and hopefully they will touch readers’ hearts as much as they have mine.

MY REVIEW

I am so thrilled to read a book from this very gifted author. Her style is calm, slow and opens the readers to a world that includes faith and flawed characters. Readers will easily fall in love with the characters in this story because they are relatable.

As I started the book all I could think of was, “Power comes at a price.” Jonathan’s grandfather is greedy, ruthless and demanding. His idea is preposterous and reeks of power and ruthlessness. Jonathan can’t believe that he is being blackmailed into marrying someone he doesn’t know just so his grandfather can be the wealthier.

Melissa is my favorite character because she is graceful, kind and has a heart to help others. She has always done what her parents asked of her until now. Hearing her mother tell her that she is to marry someone who she has no feelings for is ridiculous. Besides she has other more pressing things to occupy her time. A secret she has hidden may cost her more than she thinks.

I love how the author gives us laughter as Melissa mistakes who her soon to be groom is. Oh I could picture the scene as it is announced and a surprised Melissa feels the world get dark. When Johnathan realizes Melissa’s mistake it makes sense why she has ignored him. Now maybe they can work together to stop this ridiculous arrangement.

Readers who like reading stories about arranged marriages are in for a treat with this book. The author illustrates trusting God and following His direction for your life. Melissa and Jonathan are not so different when they see how their families want power and wealth. Will this arrangement have a happy ending?

The Story Behind the Story

I love thinking outside the box and crafting a story filled with originality as well as taking the common trope and hijacking it to suit my own reading interest. Thankfully readers do too as they continue buying my books. However, none of what I create is mine to claim, as God continues to spark my imagination in the ordinary every day. Hunting for a Husband started with a chance encounter, a few God winks, and ended with lots of research on my part.

Long story short, my husband was commissioned to work on an all-terrain vehicle for a Mennonite gentleman who was disabled. His condition didn’t allow him to drive a vehicle, and his livelihood was quite unique. This gentleman owned and operated an outdoor shop with archery being the center of the focus. Before this book was released he sold the business, but the echoes of his many years remain.

I had the opportunity to meet him. He was funny, informative, and had a beautiful wife and family. I never crossed over to asking his story. It’s his story after all, but everything about the encounters struck a chord in my writer’s brain.

Fast forward a year when I came across an article about deer breeding farms. Don’t ask. You have to be married to an avid hunter to understand why some things pique my interest. And we do have a few deer farms locally. Discovering one of the most well-known deer farms belongs to an Amish gentleman surprised even me.Again, all these little bits collected in my head. It wasn’t until I learned of an Amish man who aligned bows and was an avid hunter that I realized I needed to stop sitting on these thoughts and start writing them.

Thus, the Wickey deer farm was born. This story took me across four state lines, a short novella, and a very detailed and informative conversation with a surgeon!

The Wickey deer farm was first introduced to readers in Leaving Lancaster, a short novella in A Lancaster Amish Christmas. Readers fell in love with the three Wickey sisters, and though the plot twist appealed to readers, Leah deserved to find the same love as her sisters. She wasted so many years on the wrong man. Joe Shetler, after years of accepting his future was set by one boyhood mistake, needed to learn that God is the Author of our lives.

I hope you smile, laugh, and find yourself immersed within these pages of second chances, leaps of faith, and the power of friendship and family.

MY REVIEW

This has been such a nice story to read. I appreciate how the author slowly builds a friendship between Joe and Leah. They both have longed to fit in but something holds them back. I like how Joe is able to share things with Leah that isn’t always easy to hear. Forgiveness plays a big part in the story.

I don’t think Leah has ever thought about how she has not forgiven someone that hurt her deeply. It has made her a little unsure of herself. She gets a wake up call when Joe mentions forgiveness, but Leah turns the conversation around on Joe instead of taking responsibility for her feelings. To be fair , Joe still has bitterness about his accident. Two lonely people who share a common thread make this a great teaching moment for readers.

The author delivers a wonderful story that shares how two people learn to trust God more and find happiness. I like how the characters are relatable and shares issues that we face as well. For Joe it’s a lesson in trusting God and not giving up. Leah struggles with finding someone who will love her and believe in herself.

“If we have joy in the morning, we will have peace in the night.”
