More from Blossom

Have you ever felt like something, or someone is watching you? Have you ever experienced darkness in a fully lit room? Or wondered if a malevolent force was working against you?

We all love stories on angels and God’s love and protection, but we also have an enemy… a living, breathing adversary who comes to steal, kill, and destroy. Ephesians 6:12 says: “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.” (NKJV)

This series—The Victory Series—found me. My genre is historical romance. I was building a following, won some awards, and loved what I was doing. But as I finished up my last series, the Holy Spirit made it very clear that Mara would be my next project. From my own experiences of childhood abuse and my marriage under fire, I added enough fiction to protect real-life people and created a story that reveals the unseen spiritual world hard at work—both benevolent and malevolent forces.

We do not fight alone. In this third and final book of this series, Mara comes face-to-face with evil attacks on her children and on the very life force within her. She must choose whether to remain faithful to the end or give in to the narrative the enemy of her soul whispers to her and to us all: God does not love you or care what you are going through—He never has.

Mara’s birth to death story unfolds in a unique, riveting, and page-turning experience that will alert you to events taking place in the unseen spiritual realm.

You will be entertained, (nothing wrong with that) but you will also come away with a greater appreciation for prayer, for Christ, and for His work on the cross. You may even view the trials of life in a new encouraging way. The battle is real—but the One by our side is victorious.

MY REVIEW

Let me start this review with a special message to readers. It is a must to read this series in order. From the first book the author lets us witness the overwhelming life Mara endures as a child. The abuse is endless yet Mara finds strength in God.  Spiritual warfare is front and center in each book and is a powerful example of the tricks of the enemy.

As we begin the final book in this series, we see Mara and her husband desperately try to repair a very fractured marriage. It is so difficult to truly understand the battle Mara has been through. A mother who wanted nothing more than to see Mara suffer unbearable pain emotionally and physically.

Lucas has done everything he can to repent of his sins and seeks forgiveness from Mara. Some may think that Mara should not repair their marriage but she  cries out to Him for help. She is weak, feeling alone and wonders if God is listening. Her pain is felt  deep in the pages of this story as the author flawlessly lets us witness how desperate a person is to feel the touch of God.

I want to take a deeper dive into Lucas’s life for a bit. He had everything including  success, a great marriage where God was first. One moment of temptation found his world shatter. We need to remember that the enemy is waiting for a way to slither into our lives. Lucas takes the bait and his world explodes before him. But then there is grace. Oh what a wonderful gift God gave Him. A second chance, forgiveness and an example of unconditional love of God is illustrated in Lucas’s life. “ There  by the grace of God go I.” ( I Corinthians 15:10.)

The author fills the pages with scriptures that encourage and give hope. I loved when I read this in the book, “ Shame only lingers where truth has not rooted.” This is so true when we allow the enemy to tell us lies so we can’t be set free. Although this series may have sensitive subjects, it is a very powerful illustration of spiritual warfare. Also included in the story are Biblical figures that repented for their sins and God used them.

If I could I would give this book ten stars because it is such a realistic look at spiritual warfare. The enemy won’t give up if there is a chance of penetrating into your mind. Grab a copy and get ready for an emotional, faith filled story that for me was life changing.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

More from Gina

The story of The Puzzle Within began four years ago with the seed of an idea based on my enjoyment of Escape Rooms. I imagined a villain that moved an escape room into the “real world” and an FBI agent with nightmares that no one could or would explain.

In 2023, I entered the first five chapters into Scrivening Press’s “NovelStarts” contest and won first place in the Mystery/Suspense category. In the last three months of 2023, I wrote the entire novel, then spent the next couple of months in editing mode. My beta readers gave me feedback, and I incorporated their thoughts. In June of 2024, I entered The Puzzle Within into Scrivening Press’s “GetPubbed” contest and won the grand prize, a publishing contract.

It’s been my dream since a young age to be a traditionally published author, but it’s God who gets all the glory. I write for Him and His glory, and it’s my prayer that The Puzzle Within will touch lives as well as entertain readers.

A large focus in The Puzzle Within are the riddles, puzzles, and ciphers Enigma leaves for Arizona and Nick in their pursuit of a kidnapped teenager and the truth behind Arizona’s nightmares.

This message below is coded in Caesar Cipher. To solve, take each letter and shift it by four letters, wrapping around from Z to A. So, A=D, B=E, C=F… and so on. (Traditionally, the Caesar Cipher shifts by thirteen letters, but I didn’t want to make it that difficult.)

Once you solve the code, leave a comment below with an emoji if you’ve figured it out—but no spoilers!

Somewhere in the story, a truth waits to be uncovered.
It’s simple. It’s powerful. It’s hidden.
Can you crack the code?

MY REVIEW

A multi layered mystery that comes together piece by piece. I love doing puzzles that require placing each piece in the correct place. I always start at the edges and work towards the middle. It fascinates me to see how one piece can change the entire puzzle.

In this story the key to solving the mystery is deciphering the codes or puzzle to figure out the answer. An escape room starts us off on a journey where each clue leads to another. I have always wanted to go to an escape room and try to solve the mystery. I like how the author leaves breadcrumbs for readers to join the characters as a race to rescue someone is hidden  in a series of puzzles.

I really enjoyed the conversation between Ari and Nick about God. Ari believes what she did to someone was justified but Nick sees it differently. God gives us free will and Ari thinks that if she was God she would , “ create mankind without a will, so she could control them.”  Interesting that Ari is very bitter and won’t let go of something that has cost her so much. I couldn’t wait to see where their relationship would go.

Step by step Ari and Nick follow clues to rescue Bridgette. The author is clever as she takes the characters to places where they seem to be close to solving the clues but will they be in time to save Bridgette?

I loved the way Ari starts to trust Nick and grows close to God as they both search for answers. The Enigma is deceitful, dangerous and revengeful. I paid special attention to see where the story would go as I continued to want this evil person exposed. I love a good suspenseful  book with faith in the mix and the author delivers both in this heart pounding story. The past catches up with our  main characters which add a depth of raw emotions.

Be sure to give yourself time to read this book in one setting because there is no way you  will be able to put it down. I love this author’s ability to keep readers guessing and allowing them to be part of the story as clues and riddles start to get personal.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

About the Author

Lyndsey Lewellen grew up on a healthy dose of comic books, punk music, and sci-fi. She infuses all three loves into novels written for young adults. Inside her “what if” worlds, her characters take risks, grow, and fight for what matters. When she’s not writing or whittling down her endless TBR, she designs novel covers and paints on shoes. She lives on a small Texas farm with her best friend/husband, five children, and what some might call a zoo of animals (especially after meeting the peacocks).

More from Lyndsey

Justice. Mercy. Grace.

Teen girls in my youth group hear these words often. Maybe that’s because the simplest words are sometimes the hardest to define—and even harder to live out. So, we talk about them a lot. In fact, we go over their meanings so often that when our church’s youth pastor asked the main group to define grace one Wednesday night, girl after girl turned to look at me sitting in the back. They knew the answer. I was proud.

But knowing that justice is getting what you deserve, mercy is not getting what you deserve, and grace is getting what you don’t deserve is only half the battle. The real challenge? Learning when—and how—to apply them.

In The Crier Stone, the conclusion to The Chaos Grid duology, Juniper Conway comes face to face with God’s mercy in direct conflict with her sense of justice. We love it when He relents in His wrath toward us. But what happens when He stays His hand against our enemies?

The people of Juniper’s futuristic Texas experience justice daily for the sins of the past. In their attempt to fix the climate, their ancestors instead turned the world into a wasteland. Now, the last remnants of civilization hide away in domed cities, clinging to their technology like a drug—willing to sacrifice anything for the next upgrade. The government forbids advanced tech outside the domes, trapping its people inside their artificial paradise.

But a life of confinement and convenience is hardly the justice Juniper wants for those who orphaned her. And when visions confirm God’s call for her to save the worst of the domed cities from destruction, she rages at His mercy. Of all the people He could choose to show kindness to her enemies, why would He choose her?

If she had His power, she would do things differently.

At its heart, Juniper’s struggle is one of trust. Is God just in showing mercy to those who don’t deserve it? Would she see His choices differently if she knew everything He did? We may not always understand why God allows suffering on this side of eternity. In Juniper’s world, deadly nano-drugs run rampant, corrupt mega-corporations kill without consequence, and inhumane tech enhancement labs push the boundaries of morality for the next upgrade. Yet, God’s mercy does not mean He has abandoned justice.

Paul says in Acts 17:30-31:

“In the past God overlooked such ignorance, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent.  For he has set a day when he will judge the world with justice by the man he has appointed. He has given proof of this to everyone by raising him from the dead.”

It was at the cross that justice, mercy, and grace met—a breathtaking harmony orchestrated by a sovereign God.

Juniper’s journey is filled with trials, betrayals, and impossible choices as she is forced to confront the full weight of justice, mercy, and grace. Will she step into her destiny and save the domed city, or let it all burn?

Find out in the thrilling conclusion to this wild Texas dystopian duology.

—Lyndsey

MY REVIEW

Another epic adventure in this series draws fans of dystopia to grab a copy of this book. I remember reading the other in this series and  wasn’t sure if I could wait long to find out the conclusion. It is not hard to accept that this story could happen with your imagination. I loved the setting of Texas and the grit behind the characters.

Oh yes the action is phenomenal and the author does an excellent job of keeping readers on their toes. I felt like I was in the book walking alongside our main  characters. They are determined to survive when surrounded by technology that is beyond what I could imagine. What would it be like to live in this  world created by the author?

There is a bit of romance that doesn’t take away from the story which I appreciated. One thing is evident in this gripping adventure . God is definitely in this story and we see characters who want to follow and obey  Him. Be sure and get your copy to  see how dealing with your past will lead to freedom as you allow God to direct your path and trust Him in any circumstance.

Excerpt

June 23, 1914

Perfect husbands were rare, except perhaps in fiction, but Grace Percy, Countess of Astley, had married the real-life equivalent, she was certain.

“I still cannot believe this surprise, Frederick!” Grace’s shock had continued all the way from the harbor, where her dear husband had announced that they’d arrived in America instead of England. “I thought the terrain looked different than England, but I never suspected we’d go anywhere else except your beloved Havensbrooke.”

Our beloved Havensbrooke, I hope?” he corrected, turning from his place in the front seat of the hired touring, next to a rather somber driver.

Her smile immediately responded. At nearly seven months married, Grace still found her thoughts paused on occasion at the idea of his English estate being her home. But how could she help it? They’d only lived in the estate a few months before they’d taken off on their honeymoon tour. But oh, what a delightful introduction to her new home, complete with a murder mystery and a ghost hunt.

She sighed. Married life certainly kept proving to be wonderfully exciting.

She sent him another grin before tipping her head out the window just enough to take in the familiar lane leading to her father’s house. “How did you even know where to go? Harrington is such a small place outside of Richmond, and I know I’ve never given you exact directions.”

His low chuckle warmed the already heated June air, skittering a familiar welcome of tickles up her bare neck. “I’ve written my own letters to your father, darling.” His voice, so smooth and English, carried such delicious tenderness that Grace turned to find him shooting a wink to their adopted daughter, Zahra.

Zahra’s lips tipped. She rarely showed great affection, but who could blame her? After losing her family and living on the streets of Cairo, the little girl still had plenty of healing to do. So every smile came extra special.

Poor Miss Cox, the young English maid Frederick had hired in Italy to accompany them through the remainder of their trip, blushed at Frederick’s wink and smile. After all the overt affection Grace lathered on her darling husband, it was a wonder Miss Cox hadn’t gotten used to it yet, but perhaps the trouble lay more in how very handsome her husband was.

Grace thought about that idea for a moment. She supposed if she wasn’t married to this wonderful man, she’d find herself a little awestruck too.

Truth be told, he was so handsome, he might fit the description of a dime-novel villain, but she was very glad fiction didn’t get it right on that score either.

“Besides, it may be a while before we can travel again.” He continued, turning back to face the front of the car. “I know it’s a few months earlier than we’d originally planned, but it seemed a waste not to take advantage of being at sea. And I know you’d love to see your family.”

Grace would have kissed his cheek if she hadn’t been sitting in the back seat of the touring with Zahra between her and Miss Cox. “You are the most wonderful man.” She turned to Zahra and Miss Cox. “Don’t you think so?”

Miss Cox’s eyes widened, and she quickly looked away, but Zahra’s grin stretched enough to show off her teeth. The simple white dress she wore brought out the depths of those endless gray-green eyes. Grace still couldn’t stop smiling at the very idea that the little girl belonged to her and Frederick now.

“He has all his hair and teeth.” Zahra nodded, the tiniest twinkle in her eyes alerted Grace that the little girl might be finding her humor. “That is a help.”

Frederick’s laugh burst out. “Indeed it is, Zahra. And I’m glad to still possess both of them.”

Grace studied his thick dark hair for a second longer, her fingers twitching to push through his locks, but the very idea could send poor Miss Cox through the car window. Grace drew in a deep breath to keep her show of admiration to a more appropriate public display and leaned toward Zahra. “The gardens at Rutledge House are lovely, Zahra. They were my mother’s gardens, and I’d often spend time with her there. Hopefully, when we return to our dear Havensbrooke”—she emphasized, sending her dear husband a look to ensure her noted her correction—“you and I and, perhaps even Lily, can work to restore those gardens together. Then we can make our own special place too. Gardens are very creative places in stories as well as in real life.”

MY REVIEW

This book is witty, mystery filled and a fun read. I enjoyed following Grace and Frederick on their latest journey. Their marriage seems to be rock solid which a family member is jealous of. Oh yes there is that green eyed monster running throughout the story which fuels  deceit, greed and anger.

I liked how Frederick wanted to surprise Grace with a trip before venturing off on their honeymoon. Things don’t go well when they walk into a murder scene featuring Grace’s sister. Lillias is not very friendly even though Grace wants to help her sister clear her name. Who killed Lillias’s husband?

The mystery grows deeper when the sisters are summoned to Scotland to claim an inheritance. They both must be there there for this to take place, but there is a little hiccup. With unique detective skills Grace and Frederick race to try to clear Lillias name while trying to stay out of danger.

The author delivers a clever mystery which had me trying to read faster. I like how Grace and Frederick embrace their new marriage with faith and trust. A beautiful story that captures the meaning of family. With humor along the way this book paves the way to a delightful look at embracing redemption and new relationships.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.
