Emma’s Hero by Carrie Walker is a Christian Contemporary Romance. This book centers around a young, single mother named Emma who finds herself pregnant with a baby, and her twenty-week ultrasound results in her life being changed forever. She receives the devastating news that her son has a condition that typically results in the baby being incompatible with life.

When she goes into labor and calls for emergency assistance, paramedic Ben Sullivan enters their lives and works to prove that he and God both care for the two of them. Add in a lonely seventeen-year-old blogger, Mason Hughes, who feels worthless, and this story becomes extremely moving. When his mother volunteers him to help Emma and her son each week, he finds himself growing closer to them and finding God’s purpose for his life.

I found myself caught up in the story and unable to avoid being moved to tears. The author weaves together a book filled with faith, hope, love, family, and chances to do the right thing. Extra characters in the book including: Emma’s best friend, Emma’s mother, Ben’s family and friends, plus Mason’s mother and his classmates and the story gains a richness that makes it impossible to put down.

I must add be sure to read the author’s notes at the end of the book that explain the inspiration behind this story. It truly needs to be shared.

Carrie Walker lives in Michigan with her husband and seven children. From her ten years serving as a high school youth minister, adventures around the globe, and raising a family, many stories have been knit within her heart.

As an avid reader she pens what she loves to read: contemporary stories that bring hope to a hurting world. Weaving romance among storylines of characters in struggle, she aims to show God working in all situations. When she’s not playing board games with her husband, shuttling kids in the Walker bus, or wishing for snow, Carrie can be found at the keyboard bringing those stories to life.

A number of years ago, I walked into a hospital room to visit a young woman I knew whose daughter with semi-lobar holoproscencephaly had been admitted. When I laid my eyes on the beautiful, tiny baby I knew that sweet girl had touched many lives, probably without her mother even knowing. The seed for a story was planted. I’d never written a book before so I ignored it for a long time, but then I witnessed an isolated teen in the school my children went to and that seed of an idea blossomed. Soon, the idea of a baby changing the life of a troubled teen would not leave me alone. And because I believe every book is better with romance, that baby might just have to touch a few other lives  I took writing classes and penned this story over and over until it was right. And now I hand baby Theo to you, and pray he touches your life as well.

Rip Tide by Lisa T. Bergren is a Romantic Fantasy. This book is the second book in the Oceans of Time series. It continues to chronicle the lives of the Betarrini and the Forelli families. As a dual timeline, multi-character book, I found myself having to look back to see what character was the focus of any given section.

I love the idea of this book more than the actual execution of the book. I found it hard to follow as far as jumping around from one viewpoint to another. The author includes drama, suspense, Medieval times and more.

About the Author

It all started the morning I learned that the Gospel of John was published fifty years after Jesus died. Fifty years! What did John do all that time? Where did he live? Why did he wait? Frankly I got a little obsessive about this man who became the last disciple.

Living in Hawaii

For the past 20 years, I’ve been a member of a Bible-based Christian church in Hawaii. About eight years ago, our pastor, Kahu Billy Mitchell, challenged our Elders group to pray and read the Bible for one hour every morning.

It wasn’t as though we were not reading the Bible or praying every day, but he challenged us to take our devotions up a few notches. So, I did just that.

During one of those early morning sessions, I was studying the books of the New Testament in a broad sense. Who wrote them and when? What were the broad themes covered in each?

I found out that a huge gap of 50 years elapsed after the ministry of Jesus and the publication of the Gospel of John. That morning something else hit me–John outlived all the others to become the last disciple. I couldn’t stop thinking about how lonely it must have been to be the last one standing.

A few years later, I began writing The Last Disciple Series of Christian historical novels about the life of John.

The Last Disciple Series

The Last Disciple is a series of Christian novels based on the Bible and Christian history. The first in the series: The Last Disciple: Crisis in Jerusalem, begins in the year 62 AD. In it, you walk with John through the streets of Jerusalem. With him, you face multiple crises and come to understand what it is to stand alone and lean only on the Lord.

This book, The Last Disciple: Exile in Ephesus is the third in the series, following The Last Disciple: Escape to Antioch (book two) and The Last Disciple: Crisis in Jerusalem (book one).

Night Falls on Predicament Avenue by Jaime Jo Wright is a mystery thriller. This book is on filled with mystery and suspense. In the past in 1910, Effie and her younger sister Polly find themselves caught up in a murder. Polly draws Effie into visiting 322 Predicament Avenue where Polly witnesses a murder and basically becomes comatose afterwards.

In the present, Norah Richman finds herself fulfills her twin sister’s dream of owning a bed-and breakfast at 322 Predicament Avenue, but another murder takes place.

I don’t recommend reading this book right before bed. The twists, turns, murder, and mystery May keep you up. In some ways, I found this book a bit dark for my tastes. But, if you enjoy mystery/thrillers that keep you on the edge of your seat, check out this book for yourself.

True crime did NOT just become popular in this century! Scour the old newspapers for a full and detailed telling of the latest crime. That’s how I got the idea for Night Falls on Predicament Avenue! Yes! I read an old newspaper article from the late 1800’s in which they described in quite delectable detail, the crime scene of a murder in a house with questionable history. That being said, it’s also important to note, that forensics DID just recently become popular in the last 50-100 years. In the 1800’s, if you were murdered, it was common for your neighbor to tour and trample over your crime scene out of curiosity and/or the hope they might be of service in solving the crime. More likely than not, they were merely wanna-be podcast listeners of true crime shows simply born too early for that technological advancement.

Springtime in Surrey is a collection of Christian Women’s Fiction and Historical and Contemporary Romance stories by Faith Blum, Andrea Renee Cox, Bailey Gaines, Katja H. Labonté, Grace A. Johnson, Rachel Leitch, Erika Mathews, and Kellyn Roth. This collection of stories will draw you in and keep you reading.

Although these stories stand alone, combined in one volume, they provide the perfect compilation to keep you engaged. I honestly can say I could not pick a favorite out of all of these stories. The authors did a wonderful job creating memorable characters and enjoyable storylines.

However, if I had to name what story most resonated with my life, dreams, and aspirations, I would have to say it would be The Cottage on the Hill by Andrea Renee Cox. Since my daughter took ballet lessons, I enjoyed reading about Moira, teatime, and her struggles to discover hope in her lost ballerina dreams.

Hey everyone! I’m Kellyn Roth, owner of Wild Blue Wonder Press and one of the authors on the Springtime in Surrey collection. I just wanted to come on here today and talk briefly about Surrey—and specifically answer the question I’m sure many of you had in your minds when you learned that the novella collection was set in this English county: “Why Surrey?!”

The landscapes, the people, and the unique atmosphere of a location can and should shape the stories we tell. Though none of our authors are actually natives of Surrey, our stories are set there! So why?

Well, I’ll tell you.

Reason #1: There’s a Lot of History in Surrey

Surrey is a place steeped in history, with tales that date back centuries. It has links to the Magna Carta and played a heavy role in the English Civil War. A lot of historical figures came from Surrey or spent significant amounts of time there.

Quite a few of our stories are set in history, and the ones that aren’t bear some vintage link that ties them back to the “olden days.” There’s such beauty in history, and as a historical author, I love featuring stories that delve back into the past!

Reason #2: It’s Gorgeous There!

Surrey’s landscapes provide an idyllic backdrop for storytelling—our Pinterest board will tell you that much! From the rolling hills of the North Downs to the tranquil beauty of the “Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty” (what a mouthful!), this county offers an abundance of scenic vistas that captivate both locals and visitors alike.

We hoped to transport our readers to a place of natural wonder and evoke a sense of serenity through the quaint settings. Some of our stories take place in the countryside—and some in villages or towns. But all of them are so atmospheric and fun!

Reason #3: All the Quaint Villages and Towns

One of the defining characteristics of Surrey is its charming villages and towns, each with its own distinct character and charm. From the cobblestone streets of Guildford to the historic market town of Farnham, these locales are brimming with personality and provide a sense of community that is often lost in larger cities.

By setting some of our stories in these close-knit communities, we hope to capture the essence of Surrey’s rural charm and the warmth of its residents. I mean, who doesn’t love a village? (I’m a fan!)

Reason #4: It’s Close to London

While Surrey is known for its rural beauty, its proximity to London makes everything a little easier for us authors. The county acts as a gateway to the capital, allowing for the infusion of city life and providing opportunities for our characters to embark on exciting adventures beyond the county’s borders … or to have them be “running away” from something, as is the case in some stories.

Though alliteration did play a role, as you may have guessed, Surrey’s draws spoke for themselves—and I’m so glad we chose this dynamic county!

Fulfill the Dream to Write Today

Although I have always been an avid reader, the writing bug hit me in ninth grade after I received an A on a short story that I had enjoyed writing. The original payoff had been the comment the teacher wrote under the grade: “I doubt the originality of this story;” and then I received the ultimate compliment: My best friend received an A on her story and the teacher had added the same comment on her paper. My friend had copied the story from a book she liked. But my story began and ended with me.

I was ecstatic that my writing could be taken as a professional’s and envisioned a full-time writing career until life took me on an alternative pathway. During my teen and young adult years, the vision of writing dimmed, but my dream remained intact. The desire to create stories ran throughout my bloodstream. Yet, it took me fourteen years to venture into the writing life. In my late twenties, I wrote a four-act play after two months of self-discipline and pounding the keys on my typewriter. In high gear from that success, I held auditions, rented a full-stage theater, and debuted Pajama Party in front of family and friends.

All systems were go for a full-time writing career until life happened to me once again, and then my newfound discipline and resolve disappeared. Some thirty years later, after five years of my nephew encouraging me to write on a regular basis, I bit the bullet and wrote daily. A Gateway to Hope became a reality one year later.

So, for everyone who longs to create stories for young and old, my best advice is to just do it. For most people, the only way to have enough time is to take it where you can—even if you’re recording scenes on your phone while shopping at the grocery store. Every little bit helps to build your characters and storyline.

Never feel that you don’t have anything significant to write about. Your first book may be one conversation or observation away.

The author created a memorable storyline and amazing characters. I found myself unable to put this book down. I loved seeing Vienna and Matt’s relationship grow. I also appreciated how the author developed the backstories of both characters as well.

Love’s Promise by Penny Zeller is a Christian Historical Romance. It is the fourth book in the Wyoming Sunrise series. While you could read this book alone, I recommend reading the other books in order. The story focuses on Amaya Alvarado and Silas McFadden. She lost her fiance to a tragic accident and has vowed never to love again. But two years later, her grandmother asks her to come to Poplar Springs to help with her grandfather.

Silas McFadden carries secrets and pain of his own. But when Amaya’s grandmother asks him to ride out and ensure her granddaughter’s safety, the two find their worlds and hearts colliding.

The depth of emotion and character development in this book help bring the story to life. Once I began reading, I found myself unable to put it down. Anytime I pick up a book by Penny Zeller, I expect to enjoy it, and this book lived up to my expectations.

In Love’s Promise, one of the tender memories main male character, Silas McFadden, recalls is, as a young’un, making his Oma carrot cake for her birthday from her favorite recipe.

Big clumsy hands weren’t helpful when it came to cracking the eggs and scooping the batter into the pan. He’d opened the oven door at least twenty times in the course of the cake baking just to be sure he didn’t burn it. For if he did, there were no more ingredients.

The icing was runny, but Oma hadn’t minded. When she finally returned home, Silas had the cake waiting for her. She had cried, told him how much she loved him, and then together, they’d eaten the entire cake that evening.

I’d love to share with you Oma’s recipe, which in actuality, is a family recipe. 

Oma’s Carrot Cake

2 c. flour, sifted

2 c. sugar

2 tsp. soda

2 tsp. salt

1 Tbsp. cinnamon

Sift together the above ingredients and set aside.

3 c. grated carrots

4 eggs

1 ½ c. oil

Mix well 1 c. carrots with 1 egg and ½ c. of oil. Repeat twice and add extra egg with last mixing. Combine with dry ingredients. Mix well.

Pour into greased pan and bake at 350º for one hour. Cool. Frost if desired.

Colonial American medicine fascinates me. The shortage of doctors made it critical for women to maintain medicine kits that included remedies brought with them from Europe as well as those shared with them by Native Americans.

In Love’s Winding Road, my character Rose falls into river rapids and suffers serious scrapes and bruises. Daniel, the half-Cherokee scout of her wagon train, rescues her and makes witch hazel flowers into a paste.

With gentle movements, he spread the ointment on her arms, legs, and neck. When he dabbed some on several raw places on her scalp where her hair had been ripped out, Rose clenched her teeth until her face hurt. With her hand trembling, she reached up to touch her hair.

“Don’t worry. It will grow back. Just thank the good Lord, for though it may be distressing and painful to have lost some of your hair, the strands helped me keep track of you.”

Rose’s father suffers from arthritis in his hands, so he chews on the twigs of black willow trees (not weeping willows) and drinks the tea his wife prepares from the bark also used to treat back pain, headaches, and inflammatory conditions.

When a mountain lion attacks Daniel, Rose stitches the laceration. She cleans the area with whiskey and offers it to him as a painkiller.

She threaded her needle with her finest flax fiber, and holding her breath, she began the first tiny stitches. Think of it as cloth. Think of it as cloth. She repeated the words over and over in her head.

Sometimes doing research can be amusing.

The night before I was to see my doctor, I’d read a resource book, Indian Doctor – Nature’s method of curing and preventing disease according to the Indians. I showed my doctor the Indian cure for my problem.

What a hoot! We had such fun looking through the book. Seems as if every cure involved mixing something with wine, ale, beer, or liquor. We came to the conclusion that with enough alcohol, even if you still had the problem, you wouldn’t care anymore.

Two weeks later, I saw my doctor for an earache. Of course, we looked up the Indian cure. It involved lily onions, marsh mallows, oil of violet—all taken with wine. And then, bleeding.

I’ll stick with antibiotics.

I pray that my Great Wagon Road series honors the Lord and the gifts He has given me and that you will love my characters as much as I do. Soli Deo Gloria.
