Celebrate Lit Blog Tour: A Spring at the Greenbrier

Book: A Spring at the Greenbrier

Author: Sandra Merville Hart

Genre: Christian Historical Romance

Release Date: April 30, 2024

Marilla will sacrifice anything for her family. So when her sister’s doctor suggests daily sulphur spring baths, an amenity her family could never afford, Marilla takes a job at The Greenbrier resort bathhouse in order to give her sister the care she needs. When her sister befriends another girl staying at the resort with a similar health condition, Marilla finds herself crossing paths with the girl’s handsome, charming, older brother. And despite their growing attraction to each other, courting Wes must remain a dream. After all, resort staff cannot court guests and Marilla will not risk her sister’s health for her own happiness.

Wealthy resort guest, Wes Bakersfield, has dreams for a future and plans to make his family’s business his own. And while he finds himself drawn to Marilla, despite their differing social classes, he can’t help but wonder if she is really interested in him, or in his wealth.

Can the couple find the trust to help their love succeed, or will their differences pull them apart?

I truly enjoy Christian Historical Romance Books and I also like reading books that are part of a series. A Spring at the Greenbrier by Sandra Merville Hart is Book 7 in the Romance at the Gilded Age Resorts series. The series is written by Various Authors and I enjoyed the first 6 books in this series and have been anticipating the release of this book.

We are taken back to 1914 in West Virginia. Marilla has started working at the Greenbrier Resort, as they have a Sulphur Spring Bath. She wants to help her sister who has special needs and the Sulphur Spring Bath has attributes that help her. Marilla's sister befriends another girl at the Bathhouse who is also there for the healing benefits of the Bathhouse. Wes Bakersfield is the brother of the girl and Marilla sees how handsome he is. They both grow attracted to one another, although Marilla knows she cannot have a relationship with him due to being an employee of the resort. Wes comes from a wealthy family and has dreams for his future. His heart wants to include Marilla in his future, but his mind wonders if she feels the same for him or is she seeking his wealth? Will the 2 girls receive healing from the Spring Bath? Will there be a true relationship between Marilla and Wes?

WOW, this series keeps getting better with each new book. I really LOVE this time period and the authors really make the reader feel like they are in the presence of the time period. I really enjoyed Marilla and Wes's story. Their dedication to helping their siblings was immeasurable. Their attraction to each other and how to persue a relationship for the right reasons was beautiful.  This book is one of Family, Faith, LOVE and seeking God's plan and not our own. I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who enjoys the time period and Christian Romance Fiction. FANTASTIC  BOOK!

More from Sandra

In A Spring at The Greenbrier, Book 7 in Romance at the Gilded Age Resorts Series, Marilla, our heroine, is as desperate as her mother to find healing for her younger sister’s polio. When the doctor recommends daily bathing in the sulphur springs, her family cannot afford the cost. Marilla transfers to the bath wing at The Greenbrier where her new boss allows her to bring her sister at the end of each day after the guests have finished their bathing sessions. It makes for a long day yet the sacrifice is worth her exhaustion if the springs can help her ten-year-old sister.

The Greenbrier, a beautiful and elegant resort in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, first received its fame from healthy benefits of drinking the sulphur springs and bathing in its waters.

Both the hero and heroine in A Spring at The Greenbrier have younger sisters who can benefit from heated spring baths.

The bulk of my research for this story was for the springs and what illnesses benefit from them. I had to discover the illnesses for which doctors recommended the baths historically.

Soothing soaks in hot springs are recommended even today. They can boost blood circulation, reduce pain, improve skin conditions, reduce stress, decrease inflammation in joints, and detoxify the body.

Most resort guests in the early days drank tumblers of the water before each meal. A resort doctor in the 1800s cautioned taking a maximum of 12 glasses daily. Health benefits for the bowels, liver, kidneys, and skin most often appeared between three to six weeks. The resort began to sell it in bottles at drug stores. It was labelled as A Natural Laxative.

Major renovations were done by new owners for a grand reopening in September of 1913. Marilla, our heroine, begins working at the Women’s Department of the new bath wing. Female guests enjoyed heated sulphur spring baths in bathing rooms. Doctors sent their wealthy patients to the springs with a recommended regimen of bathing that might also include drinking the spring water. The temperature of the water, the frequency, and the length of the baths were set by their doctor.

Folks suffering from a variety of ailments sought benefits from the spring waters, including gout, rheumatism, arthritis, neuritis, dyspepsia, jaundice, scurvy, hay fever, malaria, bronchitis, asthma, and chronic diseases of the skin, stomach, bowels, and liver.

Mineral waters can harm people with aneurisms in the heart and large arteries, cancer, tubercular consumption, and some brain complaints.

The springs were of great benefit for folks suffering from chronic complaints. These benefits happened so gradually that patients started to feel better “without being able to account for it.”

So there were a lot of conditions to choose from for my two ailing girls in my story.

A Spring at The Greenbrier is a nostalgic story set in 1914. I invite you to read the whole series!

FrontGate Media Blog Tour: Seen Secure Free by Allison Allen

In a world that screams: Be seen! Be known! and often measures value by likes and shares and follows, it's easy to feel invisible, unheard, unloved. But God's Word offers a powerful and freeing counternarrative: true treasure is actually found in the "hidden" life of Christ.

Somewhere along the way, we've confused our level of visibility with our value. We've mixed up fame with fruitfulness. We've equated exposure with excellence.

But what if we stopped trying so hard to be seen, recognized, and affirmed by the world around us? What if there's a different way of living altogether?

Seen, Secure, Free unpacks the great promise in Colossians 3:3: "Your life is hidden with Christ in God" and reminds us that when God hides us in himself, he provides a non-negotiable, never-ending source of contentment, identity, and worth.

Join Bible teacher Allison Allen as she explores the incredible power of hiddenness in nature, history, and Scripture, which will help you:

  • Let go of the pressure to be recognized and praised by others;
  • Release the resentment that comes from feeling unseen or misunderstood;
  • Find contentment in a loving God who knows you deeply;
  • Find security in a powerful God who establishes your identity, worth, and purpose;
  • Reset your motivations and goals to align with his kingdom; and
  • Feel freed to pursue new adventures with Jesus

No more striving to be seen or wondering if you matter; no more pressure to perform or be visible to the world. Instead, rest assured that God truly sees, knows, and loves you more than any person ever could. And let him lead you into the freedom, joy, and transformative power of a life hidden in him.

ALLISON ALLEN attended Carnegie Mellon University's Acting Conservatory, and afterward landed on Broadway. She now uses her gifts to teach the Bible all over the country and loves nothing more than watching people run into the redemption that Jesus offers. Allison is the spiritual wingwoman to Lisa Harper on Lisa's well-received podcast, Back Porch Theology. She is the author of two books: Shine and Thirsty for More. Above all, she is grateful for the grace Christ offers to wonky-hearted people like herself.

I really enjoy Christian Living books. Seen, Secure, FREE: How a Life Hidden with Christ Strengthens and Transforms You by Allison Allen is the latest in this genre that I have read.

WOW, this book really spoke to me. I am not one who needs praise and acknowledgement from others. I do though feel like I am "wall flower" when in groups. The conversation around me is going on and I feel like I am not a part of that conversation. I also feel that I do sometimes seek affirmation of decisions I make and such. I do think that comes from so many years of others(mom, siblings, etc) making me feel like I need to second guess my life decisions. Seen, Secure, FREE really spoke that my worth doesn't come from others around me or from the world. My WORTH comes from GOD and what he sees in me and he LOVES me unconditionally. God allows me to be content with who I am and how I am seen! I feel Allison Allen has a clear message to those reading this book: You are SECURE when you allow God to lead you and not the opinions of others. I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who struggles with "BEING FREE" with God! GREAT BOOK!

Armed with a new name and career as a wingwalker and barnstormer, she travels from town to town in hopes of unearthing clues and locating her missing friend. But Geneva discovers that her past may not belong to her . . . what she once believed as truth may be nothing more than lies and deception.

"A tangled web, a sleuthing adventure, a rekindled romance . . . Walking on Hidden Wings has it all."

--Rachel Fordham, author of The Letter Tree

"Fans of intelligent mysteries, butterfly-inducing romance, and the Roaring Twenties, prepare yourselves--Walking on Hidden Wings will sweep you away to the skies! McDaniel's lyrical prose is a delight, and readers will be fascinated by the daring beginnings of aviation. A true gem."

Christian Historical Romance is one of my favorite genres. Walking on Hidden Wings: A Novel of the Roaring Twenties by Rachel Scott McDaniel is the latest in this genre that I have read.

I can honestly say this book reeled me into the storyline from the very first pages. I LOVE the 1920's Decade and this book is set in that time. Geneva Ashcroft Hayes is the main character in this book. She is determined to find out who killed her husband of only 4 months. She is being accused of being the killer, so she is fiercely wanting to find the killer. The story has a HEAVY Aviation background and I learned quite a bit of the Aviation of the 1920's.  The author does a GREAT job at writing this book with Mystery and History all in one and it truly is fascinating.  This book is a MUST READ for those who LOVE History, Mystery and a bit of romance! FANTASTIC BOOK!

This K-9 team is trained to eliminate threats. This threat could eliminate them.

Being a loner is getting old. Jazz Lamont still can’t fit in at the Phoenix K-9 Agency, and she’s losing her best friend. At least providing security with her K-9 partner at the Tri-City Fair will mean revisiting the only place where she once belonged. But a series of accidents threatens her beloved fair and puts lives at risk.

Thriller author Hawthorne Emerson suspects foul play after the first “accident.” Moonlighting as fair security to investigate the death of his sister’s boyfriend, he’s eager to find the truth. He doesn’t expect the task to lead him to the cult he escaped.

Finding the culprit behind the sabotage is personal for Jazz and Hawthorne. But someone else has a personal stake, too. Someone who wants Jazz dead. When everything she thought was true is dismantled, can Jazz risk trusting others—including God—to survive?

Lethal Danger continues the thrilling story of the elite Phoenix K-9 Security and Detection Agency that began with Hidden Danger (Guardians Unleashed, #1). (Each book can stand alone or be read as series installments.)

I have really come to enjoy Christian Romance Suspense genre. Lethal Danger by Jersuha Agen is Book 4 in the Guardians Unleashed Series. I have been enjoying this series since Book 1.

They are both working the Tri-City Fair with the K-9 unit that Jazz is a part of. Danger lurks for them and they are targeted. I LOVE how they work together to solve the mystery of who would want them killed. I also enjoyed how Jazz and Hawthorne grew closer through their adventures. The book has Danger, Suspense and some Romance. There are  many twists and turns in this book and it keeps the reader intrigued.
