Celebrate Lit Blog Tour: Forever Free by Hope Toler Dougherty

Book: Forever Free

Author: Hope Toler Dougherty

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Release Date: January 24, 2024

Phoebe Sinclair combines her love of flowers and teaching to nurture a cut flower business on her grandfather’s land. She’s got her hands full growing the farm, growing her customer base, and dealing with her growing attraction to the aloof man who’s volunteered to help make her farming dream come true.

Can she focus on her main job, or will a pair of yearning eyes and a hurting heart divert her worthy goals?

Heath Daniels has resigned himself to a life of singleness as he watches his siblings couple up and set wedding dates. Tracking their happiness, however, is more difficult than he expected. A real struggle, in fact.

Feeling the old troubles from his college years creeping back to tempt him, he’s propelled to volunteer for manual labor, leaving him exhausted, but out of danger, at the end of every day. His additional hours of agri-business, however, lead to different struggles with an intriguing farmer.

Does he have the strength to resist old temptations as well as a beautiful new one too?

Christian Contempory Romance novels are one of my favorite genres. I have really come to enjoy books by Author Hope Toler Dougherty. Forever FREE is Book 4 in the Forever Series. I have read a couple of the other books in this series.

I dove right into this book and it truly is a wonderful and heartwarming story. I recognized some of the characters from previous books. This book was Phoebe and Heath's story. Phoebe Sinclair loves FLOWERS and Teaching and therefore her Flower Business is a perfect job for her. Heath Daniels is a friend of Phoebe's and he agrees to help her and volunteer at the Flower Business. The "budding" romance between the pair is not what either anticipated, but they can see how they make a good couple. Heath has always thought he would be single forever, he does welcome the relationship with Phoebe. Heath and Phoebe do have a battle to keep their relationship good, but they also rely on their Faith and God to help them overcome hurdles. The book is about Faith, LOVE and Healing, and so much MORE! I highly recommend to this to anyone who enjoys Christian Romance! BEAUTIFUL BOOK!

Hope Toler Dougherty holds a Master’s degree in English and taught at East Carolina University in Greenville, NC, and York Technical College in Rock Hill, SC. Her early novels are Irish EncounterMars…With Venus Rising, and Rescued Hearts. Her Forever series includes Forever Music, Forever Home, and the novella, “A Hatteras Surprise,” which is featured in Candy Cane Wishes and Saltwater Dreams.

More from Hope

A few years ago, I decided to write a series since readers enjoy reading stories with familiar characters. Four siblings came to mind, perhaps because I have four children, and the Daniels family from Charlotte, North Carolina, burst onto my computer screen.

I’ve loved spending time with Ben, Heath, Sam, and Josie for the past several years and sharing how three of them found their happily ever after.  One, however, always appeared on the fringe of the story, participating, yes, but always a bit set apart from the family.

Heath Daniels is the second oldest sibling, the middle brother between Ben and Sam. Readers will discover him first in Forever Music and then in a larger role in Forever Home, but he never disclosed too much about himself in those stories.

Before I began the series, I didn’t know to plan key plot points and goals for each story as well as the whole series. As a panster, I wrote each story as it came to me or as I needed to like, for instance, the novella, “A Hatteras Surprise.”

When it came time to write Heath’s story, I hardly knew him. I wasn’t sure about his backstory, his occupation, tastes…nothing. He grudgingly released those missing pieces bit by tiny bit.

At the beginning of Forever Free, Heath feels like the black sheep in the family. In the high achieving Daniels clan, he’s the one who dropped out of college, the one who struggled with substance abuse, the one who feels less than. With all his siblings coupling up, he’s staring at a single future because of old misguided beliefs.

Guilt from an early tragedy along with bad choices play important parts in Heath’s personality. Phoebe Sinclair has her hands full nurturing her cut flower farm, plus she has to deal with a cute, but distant employee, the mysterious Heath.

I enjoyed getting to know Heath and watching his growth from the sullen, misunderstood character to the confident businessperson who wants Phoebe to achieve her dream. I hope you’ll enjoy his story, too.

Here’s a recipe Phoebe bakes for her grandfather in Forever Free. I’m not sure why it’s called Swedish Nut Cake, but I’m sure it’s delicious.

Swedish Nut Cake

Ingredients for cake:                                       Ingredients for icing:
2 C flour                                                          1 8 oz pkg creamed cheese
1 ¾ C sugar                                                     1/2 stick butter
2 eggs                                                              1 t vanilla
2 t baking soda                                                1 ½ C powdered sugar, sifted
1 t vanilla
½ chopped nuts
1 20 oz. can crushed pineapple with juice

Directions:
Mix all ingredients for cake and bake in a greased 9×13 pan at 350 degrees for 30-40 minutes. For icing, mix all ingredients and frost the cooled cake. Store in the refrigerator.

Celebrate Lit Blog Tour: If the Boot Fits by Karen Witemeyer

Book: If the Boot Fits

Author: Karen Witemeyer

Genre: Historical Romance

Release Date: March 12, 2024

One fateful night will change their destinies forever. . . .

Convinced that his stepmother and half brothers have been wrongfully evicted by cattle king Eli Dearing, Asher Ellis uses the cover of an extravagant ball to break into the Three Cedars’ ranch house to search for proof. On the verge of discovery, he flees, but a boy’s cry compels him to make a daring rescue.

Spunky and independent Samantha Dearing balks when she learns the ball her father is hosting is nothing more than a matrimonial ambush. Taking a break from unwanted suitors, Samantha spots a thief fleeing her home. When the stranger ends up saving her brother’s life, she hides the only clue to his identity left behind–his boot–and resolves to find him herself.

When Samantha encounters the older brother of a student she tutors, all thoughts of the bootless mystery man vanish. Asher values family above wealth, a rare trait that opens her heart. Afraid she will discover his past misconduct, Asher tries to keep his distance, but when a series of suspicious accidents befall her, he vows to protect her, even though saving her life could mean losing her love.

I really enjoy Christian Fiction and I have read quite a few of Karen Witemeyer's books! If the Book Fits is Book 2 in the Texas Ever After Series. I have not read Book 1 in this series, but I wasn't lost while reading Book 2.

I was captivated from the very beginning and continued reading until I finished the book, about 4hrs! The book focuses on Asher Ellis and Samantha Dearing. Asher breaks into the Dearing household to try to prove Eli Dearing evicted his Stepmother and brother. He flees the scene only to rescue Samantha's younger brother from Drowning. He leaves behind a boot upon rescuing the boy. Samantha's Dad is hosting a "ball" in hopes of finding a Suitor for Samantha. Samantha though is now interested in finding the owner of the boot and the one who rescued her brother. Will Samantha find the boot owner? Will Asher be able to protect Samantha when trouble arises for her?

WOW, I was captivated from the very beginning and continued reading until I finished the book, about 4hrs! I really LOVE how Asher and Samantha discovered each other and how despite the circumstances were able to form a relationship. I really LOVE how both are very devoted to their families, especially Asher. Asher is a "hero" for Samantha in wanting to protect her from Harm. The book has many twists and turns and kept me on the edge of my seat while reading!  I am very much looking forward to the next book in the series! FANTASTIC BOOK!

Character Names and Word Games

One of my favorite parts of writing any book is finding the perfect names for my characters. Names are so important. They carry meaning and expectation. They add historical flavor and help create a picture in the reader’s mind about who that character is. They can also add hidden joy to a story for me as the author that may or may not be realized by the reader.

If the Boot Fits was inspired by the classic fairy tale, Cinderella. I give it a fresh western twist and mixed up the plot a bit, but it was important to me to fill this tale with subtle nods to the version I loved as a child. One of the main ways I did this was through the naming of my characters.

I worked hard to create names that would harken back to the original while still carrying meaning of their own. Instead of Cinderella, we have a hero named Asher Ellis—Ash being a synonym of Cinder, and Ellis playing off of Ella. For our heroine, I wanted something to play on the “charming” motif without being too on-the-nose. I ended up selecting Samantha Dearing—Dearing like endearing or charming. Samantha is the feminine version of Samuel which comes into play in the story since her father’s name is Eli. The three key older ladies of the story all of names inspired by royalty, as befits a fairy tale—Regina, Elizabeth, and Victoria. Asher’s step brothers are named Jonathan and Fergus. However, Jonathan goes by Jack, giving a nod to the mice from Disney’s Cinderella, Jaq and Gus. Asher’s horse is named Bruno in honor of the dog who saved Cinderella from the tower room. We have a cattle king with a foreman named Duke as well. Whether readers catch all of these nods or not, they made me as the author smile while writing the story.

Here’s another way to have fun with names and other key story elements. I’ve created a word search for you to enjoy. Have fun!

Book: Call to Embrace

The unlikely friendship that follows, draws her closer to the answers she may have carried with her all along. But rash decisions bring new challenges that drag her further into a sea of helplessness.

I really enjoy New to me Authors and New Series. Call to Embrace by Maryann Landers is Book 1 in the new series Hope of His Calling. I have not read any books by Maryann Landers before now and I am glad to be starting with a new series.

I absolutely LOVED this book from the very first chapter. The book is Emily and Eric Corentin story. Eric is deployed and Emily has a one night stand that results in a Pregnancy. Emily makes some sudden decisions which includes leaving with her daughter and finding a homeless shelter to stay at. She has plans to terminate the "unwanted pregnancy". Emily's life is changed by a Volunteer at the Homeless Shelter. Emily is not a religious person as she denounced God many years ago when her grandma died. The Homeless Shelter is a Christian organization. The Volunteer at the Shelter speaks to Emily with God's truth and it totally changed Emily's heart. The author does an AMAZING job at addressing sensitive topics(Martial Infidelity and Abortion) with grace. I also LOVE that Emily had a change of mind about her circumstances after hearing God's word and encouragement from Rose the Homeless Shelter volunteer. This book is one about Faith, LOVE, Restoration of Marriage, Forgiveness,  and so much more! It truly is a HEARTWARMING book! I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone needing encouragement in life and struggling in their faith. I am looking forward to the next books in this series! GREAT BOOK!

More from Maryann

Call to Embrace is inspired by a true story of a young mom that I met over 13 years ago as I walked alongside her during a difficult time of her life. A year and a half ago I stood in the Pacific Ocean dip netting for salmon near the mouth of the Kenai River. As the waters tugged at my waders, I remembered the church set on the hill behind me where a cross is always lit as a beacon and I thought there is a story here. With anticipation, I prayed what God wanted me to share. What unfolded is the plot line of my friendship with that young mom set in the stunning geographical area of South-Central Alaska.

JustRead Tours Blog Tour: The Mercy Seat by Henry O. Arnold

The Mercy Seat JustRead Blog Tour

Welcome to the Blog Tour for The Mercy Seat by Henry O. Arnold, hosted by JustRead Publicity Tours!

Title: The Mercy Seat
Series:
The Urban Chronicles #1
Author:
Henry O. Arnold
Publisher:
Mountain Brook Ink
Release Date:
March 5, 2024
Genre:
Christian Contemporary Fiction

Hells Canyon is a neighborhood in Richland, Tennessee where tourists never venture, and locals fear to tread. Maxwell Crane, former Marine chaplain and pastor of The Mercy Seat church, struggles to provide a beacon of hope.

But others have their eyes set on Hells Canyon: power elites, robber barons, and street gangs seek their own gain at the cost of the beleaguered urban neighborhood. For the people who live there, it’s been a fight to exist their whole lives, and that fight is getting harder.

Maxwell doesn’t have to stay in Hells Canyon. He and his family could leave to live a comfortable middle-class existence. Instead, Maxwell chooses to risk his life—and the lives of those around him—to stand against the oppressors.

But what happens when this pastor crosses a line, taking justice into his own hands? Will his family, his community, and his God ever forgive him? Will he ever forgive himself?

Christian Contempory Fiction is one of my favorite genres. The Mercy Seat by Henry O. Arnold is the latest book in this genre that I have read. Henry O. Arnold is a new to me author and I am always excited to read books from an author whose books I haven't read before.

I have to say this book took me awhile to get into it, the beginning was a bit confusing. Once the storyline clicked with me, I truly enjoyed the book. The setting of the book is a Low Income, Drug Dealing Community. Maxwell Crane is Pastor at Mercy Seat Church and he and his family live in the Community. Pastor Maxwell chooses to live within the Hells Canyon neighborhood as he tries to make a difference and be a Beacon of Hope to the residents and Drug Dealers. I really admire Pastor Maxwell doing God's work and as I kept reading, I was reminded that this happens in neighborhoods I grew up near or in. I grew up on the Southside of Chicago and  to this day there are many Pastors in the Neighborhoods who are in the midst of Gangs and Drug Dealers. I have seen and read stories of many coming to Christ through the work of the Pastors being in the Community. The Mercy Seat has realistic characters and storyline and many twists and turns! I was on the edge of my seat reading as things got tense in for Maxwell and his family! I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Christian Fiction! FANTASTIC BOOK!
