More from Candace

危机 is an interesting character.

It means crisis in Mandarin. The first character, 危 or wei, symbolizes “dangerous.” The second, 機 or ji, means “opportunity.” Put those two words together and you have the Chinese word for crisis.

I learned about the breakdown of this character while I was living in Beijing and starting to write the Hybrid Series. It felt risky moving to Beijing to work in an all-Chinese office using my second language, taking on a completely new role, while in the middle of a serious relationship, and with zero friends or community there to support me.

When my health failed, my long-distance relationship wavered, and the program that sent me dissolved leaving me without a job or visa, I arrived at a crisis.

If you look at the Chinese character for crisis, there’s two ways of thinking about interpreting it. One, a crisis is something dangerous, to be feared, and to run away from. Or two, a crisis could be an opportunity.

The crisis I faced in Beijing led to some incredible things in my life.

Because of it, I ended up writing the Hybrid Series and getting published. My relationship (with my now husband) became stronger. I grew on a personal level in so many ways. My dependence on God deepened as well.

My time in Beijing was one you could not pay me to relive. It’s also a season I wouldn’t trade for the world.

I once heard someone say:

“Do what scares you most.”

Maybe if what you’re chasing after doesn’t scare you, you’re not reaching high enough.

Seeing a crisis as an opportunity involves a great deal of risk. It’s a scary thing. If I avoided the things that scared me, I never would have gone to graduate school, taken half the roles I did in my career, moved overseas, dated, gotten married, learned Krav Maga, given birth, signed a book deal, and many other things that ended up being some of the best experiences in my life.

It’s all a matter of perspective.

In Hybrid, the main character, Lee Urban, faces a crisis in her life.

When Urban risks everything to seek out answers about her birth origins, she finds more than she bargained for and danger ensues. At her darkest moment of despair, she sees the characters weiji, or crisis, for what they could be: a dangerous opportunity. That discovery changes everything for her.

That same discovery changed me.

At some point in our lives, we will all face a crisis. The question is, will we let the fear of danger cow us into taking the path of least resistance? Or will we be true to ourselves, take calculated risks, and pursue the things we know God made us for?

For me, I’m choosing the latter.

“What are you afraid of?”

My Favorite Place on Earth

Do you have a favorite place other than your home? Ever since I was a preteen of eleven, I have gravitated to my favorite spot. I chose it as the setting for Whispers of Wisdom.

Château de Chenonceau in Chenonceaux, France, sprawls across the River Cher in the Loire Valley.

As a child I faced this elegant petit château with wide eyes and a budding imagination. Iran up the long avenue lined with plane trees toward the columns with huge statues of lions, guarding the courtyard and entrance to the castle.

My sisters and I skipped, jumped, and played in and through the two manicured gardens, catching glimpses of the château mirrored in the river, revealing some of the magical secrets in the water. My young mind conjured up princesses escaping the castle’s confines, wandering the paths among the flowers and shrubs.

zKoZJohgQ

The ancient wooden doors opened to a fairy tale world of kings and queens. Tapestries, tiled floors, ornate furniture, flower arrangements, paintings, and stories of past grandeur. My favorite rooms were the kitchens and the gallery over the river with the black and white tiles floors. We skipped and danced from one end to the other. As I left the enchanted château, I promised to return.

Claiming a place as a favorite that is across an ocean, probably was not the best choice, but the château’s imprint remained strong. When I studied in France, I placed Château Chenonceau as a must see. I noticed my imagination and fascination had not dissipated. I’ve returned many times. My adult self enters into the fantasy world with a twirl or two on the checkered floors and a skip and a jump in the gardens.

I hope you catch some of the historical thrill of this little castle in the pages of Whispers of Wisdom.

Happy Reading!

Author Interview

What is your work schedule like when you’re writing?

After three months of research, I settle in to a writing schedule that includes a few hours a day during my work day. I am an online French and Spanish teacher so I have to carve out a daily time. I try to have two hours a day to write.

Which one of your characters speaks most to your heart? Why?

Nicole is a young character who lives on the grounds of a castle tending the gardens and helping in the castle. I would love to live in a cottage close to a small village and the castle. She has dreams and artistic skills. Give me a garden, some books, and a small cottage in France, and I’ll be just fine.

What are your hobbies?

I am an avid reader who loves to garden, walk, travel, and spend time with friends and family.

Do you prefer traditional books, ebooks, or audiobooks?

My preference will always be print books. But I read ebooks and have audiobooks ready!

What advice would you give to aspiring writers?

Write, write, write! Even if you are never published, you can still write. At some point, when the writer is ready, treat the writing process as a job. Set aside time in a schedule and stick to it.

About the Author

Chevron Ross is a pseudonym for someone unimportant. He is not a writer, but God keeps putting ideas into his head that somehow turn into stories. If you like them, be sure to offer God a prayer of thanks.

More from Chevron

Behind the Scenes

This novel might never have been born had I not seen an interview on PBS with two New York Times writers, Megan Twohey and Gabriel Dance, on December 16, 2021.

These reporters did an extensive investigation into a website on which subscribers discussed committing suicide and shared methods for doing so. Most visitors to the site were thirty or younger. There were 1.2 million messages. At least forty-five suicides in multiple countries were linked to the site.

At the time of this broadcast, I had just completed my second novel, The Seven-Day Resurrection, and was wondering what to do next. The PBS interview was so shocking that I could not stop thinking about it. What motive could a person have for encouraging strangers to kill themselves? What could one possibly gain from such an endeavor? And what could provoke someone to throw away the gift of life at such a youthful age?

Each of my novels has been the result of an inspiration from God. Once He puts an idea into my head, it consumes my imagination until I cannot stop working. As you might imagine from the title, The Samaritan’s Patient is a blend of two stories: the famous parable of Jesus in the Bible, and a young person with good intentions who gets caught up in a social media nightmare.

God did all the work on this book. He created the character of Paige Abernathy and told me how to build the novel around the circumstances of her personal life—her parents, her friends, and most of all, her Christian faith. He also created the crisis that launches her on a journey of new experiences and personal growth.

I am amazed and grateful that God would choose someone so ordinary and unaccomplished as myself to do this work. Each novel God has written through me has been a great personal gift, and a reaffirmation that God has a plan for each of us. I pray that The Samaritan’s Patient will be as great a blessing to its readers as it has been to me.

Author Interview

When/how did you decide to become a writer?

I have never considered myself a writer, although I have some minor business writing experience. I chose the pen name Chevron Ross to make sure no one knows who I am, so that God gets all the credit for the novels He writes through me.

Which one of your characters speaks most to your heart? Why?

Strangely, the one I still think about most is Norris Tankersley, the man who tries to break into the hospital emergency room. Although he’s nothing like me, his personal journey from darkness to light is so moving.

Who was/is your biggest inspiration?

Any good that I have done has resulted from God’s inspiration. The books written under the Chevron Ross name are all His ideas. I feel I’ve become a better person in the seven years since He chose me for this literary mission.

Do you prefer traditional books, eBooks, or audiobooks?

You can’t beat the simplicity of a bound-paper book. You don’t have to plug it in, boot it up, or get it repaired when it winks out. Besides, I love being surrounded by shelves full of books. It’s like being wrapped in a warm blanket.

Do you have a favorite Bible verse, or is there a particular Bible story that really resonates with you?

Jesus’ parable of the Good Samaritan, which figures largely in The Samaritan’s Patient, is my favorite part of the Bible. It comforts me to know that God understands my flaws and weaknesses, that He loves me anyway, and that He’s always willing to take me back.

About the Author

Hope Toler Dougherty holds a Master’s degree in English and taught at East Carolina University in Greenville, NC, and York Technical College in Rock Hill, SC. Her early novels are Irish Encounter, Mars…With Venus Rising, and Rescued Hearts. Her Forever series includes Forever Music, Forever Home, and the novella, “A Hatteras Surprise,” which is featured in Candy Cane Wishes and Saltwater Dreams.

A chronic volunteer, she’s a member of ACFW, NC Writers’ Network, and Triangle East Writers. She and her husband live in North Carolina and look forward to visits with their two daughters and twin sons.

More from Hope

A few years ago, I decided to write a series since readers enjoy reading stories with familiar characters. Four siblings came to mind, perhaps because I have four children, and the Daniels family from Charlotte, North Carolina, burst onto my computer screen.

I’ve loved spending time with Ben, Heath, Sam, and Josie for the past several years and sharing how three of them found their happily ever after. One, however, always appeared on the fringe of the story, participating, yes, but always a bit set apart from the family.

Heath Daniels is the second oldest sibling, the middle brother between Ben and Sam. Readers will discover him first in Forever Music and then in a larger role in Forever Home, but he never disclosed too much about himself in those stories.

Before I began the series, I didn’t know to plan key plot points and goals for each story as well as the whole series. As a panster, I wrote each story as it came to me or as I needed to like, for instance, the novella, “A Hatteras Surprise.”

When it came time to write Heath’s story, I hardly knew him. I wasn’t sure about his backstory, his occupation, tastes…nothing. He grudgingly released those missing pieces bit by tiny bit.

At the beginning of Forever Free, Heath feels like the black sheep in the family. In the high achieving Daniels clan, he’s the one who dropped out of college, the one who struggled with substance abuse, the one who feels less than. With all his siblings coupling up, he’s staring at a single future because of old misguided beliefs.

Guilt from an early tragedy along with bad choices play important parts in Heath’s personality. Phoebe Sinclair has her hands full nurturing her cut flower farm, plus she has to deal with a cute, but distant employee, the mysterious Heath.

I enjoyed getting to know Heath and watching his growth from the sullen, misunderstood character to the confident businessperson who wants Phoebe to achieve her dream. I hope you’ll enjoy his story, too.

Here’s a recipe Phoebe bakes for her grandfather in Forever Free. I’m not sure why it’s called Swedish Nut Cake, but I’m sure it’s delicious.

Swedish Nut Cake

Ingredients for cake:                                                    Ingredients for icing:
2 C flour                                                                         1 8 oz pkg creamed cheese
1 ¾ C sugar                                                                    1/2 stick butter
2 eggs                                                                             1 t vanilla
2 t baking soda                                                             1 ½ C powdered sugar, sifted
1 t vanilla
½ chopped nuts
1 20 oz. can crushed pineapple with juice

Directions:
Mix all ingredients for cake and bake in a greased 9×13 pan at 350 degrees for 30-40 minutes. For icing, mix all ingredients and frost the cooled cake. Store in the refrigerator.

Author Interview

Do you ever hide things in your stories for readers to find?

Yes, using snippets of stories or names that only people who know me well will recognize amuses me. For example, our twin boys are Lane and Quinn. In Irish Encounter, I named a street Quinn Lane. I saw a real street with that name when we visited Lane in Clarksville, TN. I hid a lot of things in Irish Encounter because it was my first novel, and I thought I was writing it only for my eyes.

What are your hobbies?

I like to cook, especially bake. I love to read and play the piano. I love crocheting, and I crochet with a group of dear friends at church every week. I love writing and receiving real mail.

What is your favorite book?

Jane Eyre! It’s such a wonderful story of persevering, of sticking to your morals even when it’d be so easy to grab what your heart longs for. Readers see Jane’s strength and confidence grow in the face of adversity throughout the novel.

Do you have a favorite Bible verse, or is there a particular Bible story that really resonates with you?

One of my favorites is Ephesians 3:20. “[God] is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine.” No matter what we can come up with, God can do more, can give more. God is more. I love that.

What advice would you give to aspiring writers?

Read, read, read in your genre and writing craft books. Write every day. Connect with other writers. Ask for real critiques from people other than friends and family. Pray, pray, pray for guidance.

Book: The Last Disciple: Exile in Ephesus

Author: Kurt Brouwer

Genre: Christian Historical Fiction

Release Date: March 15, 2024

He awoke jailed in squalor…

Would he complete his final mission?

Or would he fail to record the story only he could tell?

The epic saga of the Last Disciple continues in this captivating Christian historical novel from Kurt Brouwer.

After surviving imprisonment, John faces his greatest challenge–exile in the distant city of Ephesus. Struggling with grief and despair over the destruction of Jerusalem, John doubts his ability to complete the mission entrusted to him by Mary—to write the true gospel account of Christ’s life.

But in Ephesus, John finds unexpected allies—Timothy, Priscilla, and Tychicus, who share his passion for spreading the message of God’s love.

As John shares the good news of Jesus, he makes dangerous enemies, including the influential high priest, Alexander Cosmo, who will stop at nothing to suppress the growing Christian faith.

Amid opposition from without and internal divisions from within the early church, John must contend with those pressuring believers to adopt Jewish law and compromise the radical teachings of Christ.

When tragedy strikes those close to him, can John’s fragile hope be rekindled? Will he finally show the world all the signs, miracles, and events he witnessed on his journey with Jesus?

Don’t miss this page-turning story of faith, courage, and love.

About the Author

zjKkDfnqA

Kurt is a Christian and a member of a vibrant Christian church on the Big Island of Hawaii. He also loves to write. In addition to all the usual temptations writers face, Kurt has to fight off the lure of beautiful beaches, pounding surf, great weather, and lush golf courses. Can you imagine?

Despite those temptations, he writes The Last Disciple series of Christian historical novels and he regularly writes blog posts.

A few years ago Kurt did a study for his church on the Apostle John. That little project got him hooked on the man who started out life as a fisherman and then became the last disciple of Christ. The more Kurt learned about John, the more he wanted to know.

If you’ve ever been obsessed by anything, you’ll understand that he couldn’t stop researching the life of John and all those around him. And the result of all that research is:

The Last Disciple Series

The Last Disciple is a series of Christian novels based on the Bible and Christian history. The first in the series: The Last Disciple: Crisis in Jerusalem, begins in the year 62 AD. In it, you walk with John through the streets of Jerusalem. See how he faces multiple crises and comes to understand what it is to stand alone and lean only on the Lord.

This book, The Last Disciple: Exile in Ephesus is the third in the series, with two more books planned. Kurt is now writing the fourth book, The Last Disciple: Gospel of John.

More from Kurt

It all started one day when I learned that the Gospel of John was published fifty years after Jesus died. Fifty years! What did John do all that time? Where did he live? Why did he wait?

But wait, there’s more. On the Cross, Jesus placed his own mother under John’s protection. How long did John take care of her? Where did they live?

I think you can tell I got a little obsessive about this man, who outlived all the others to become the last disciple.

In fact, that very phrase, the last disciple, came to me early one morning when I was reading about John and Peter going to Samaria in Acts 8. John lived so long that he outlived all the others and became the last disciple.

The Youngest Disciple

What do we know about John? He walked with Jesus when he was very young, probably a teenager or very early 20s. He and Andrew were the first disciples of Christ. Before that, they both followed John the Baptist.

Anyone who reads the New Testament would know John as:

  • The son of Zebedee, his father, and Salome, his mother
  • Brother to the disciple James
  • A fisherman on the Sea of Galilee
  • He and his brother James were friends and even fishing buddies with Peter and his brother Andrew
  • Youngest of the 12 disciples.
  • Author of five books of the Bible:
    • The Gospel of John 80-90 AD
    • The Letters or Epistles of John 90-95 AD
    • The Book of Revelation 95-98 AD

But after the mention in Acts 8, that’s it for John. Radio silence for nearly 50 years. Why did it take him so long to write the Gospel of John? And that is the very question I seek to answer in The Last Disciple Series.

This book, The Last Disciple: Exile in Ephesus is the third in the series, following The Last Disciple: Escape to Antioch and The Last Disciple: Crisis in Jerusalem.

I’m now writing the fourth book, The Last Disciple: Gospel of John.

Author Interview

Is there a particular literary period that you’re drawn to (Regency, Victorian, Romantic, Modernism, etc.)? Why?

Biblical Fiction

Which one of your characters speaks most to your heart? Why?

John. I’m a bit obsessed with him. I’ve been writing about and thinking about him for years.

Do you ever hide things in your stories for readers to find?

I don’t hide things, but I don’t always spell out the historical or Biblical significance of an incident.

What is your favorite book?

The Bible

Do you prefer traditional books, ebooks, or audiobooks?

I like both. Most of my reading is in ebooks. But I have lots of research books in hardcover or paperback.

Do you have a favorite Bible verse, or is there a particular Bible story that really resonates with you?

John 19:25-27 25 Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother, his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 26 When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to her, “Woman,[b] here is your son,” 27 and to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” From that time on, this disciple took her into his home…

KB: This passage above impacted The Last Disciple Series in a major way because I was fascinated with this relationship between John and Mary.

If you could meet one author, living or passed, who would it be?

John

I’ve Got a Secret: Book Review of “The Guest” by B.A. Paris

If I were to sum up The Guest in one sentence, it would be Benjamin Franklin’s wise saying that “Three can keep a secret, if two of them are dead.” This latest novel by B.A. Paris features her trademark twists and turns, upending things just when the reader thinks they have figured out the puzzle. It is always a pleasure to read a thriller that does not have an easy, obvious solution, but rather relies on subtleties and revelations. Also, despite containing potentially disturbing topics, the story is primarily psychological and devoid of gore. Three couples form the primary characters in The Guest, each with secrets of their own. Iris and Gabriel are the main focus, and through them, especially, readers see the debilitating effects of holding onto secrets, contrasted with the fallout of bringing those secrets to light. As with lies, secrets pile up: “It seemed to Gabriel that roots, like lies, were insidious.” Just how insidious, and just how far some might be willing to go to keep their secrets, readers will have to find out for themselves.

Author Interview

When/how did you decide to become a writer?

Lisa: I truly didn’t ever imagine co-authoring a book! I have been a wordy book girl all my life. I love vocabulary and spelling. I began doing freelance articles, and in that process writing just started to make sense. Amber pulled me into doing magazine articles and the next thing I knew we were on this adventure together. It’s been a huge blessing.

Amber: Despite my career in the magazine world, becoming an author wasn’t a lifelong dream. However, a strategic moment guided by God prompted me to share my perspective and that of over 30 women through the book “Leading Ladies.” It became a transformative opportunity to alter self-perception.

What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?

Amber: My writing process is akin to throwing words down like baboons in a room full of paint. I intentionally refrain from editing in the initial stages, choosing instead to shape the content later. Collaboration is crucial, and I frequently invite others to contribute, molding the narrative. I’ve playfully coined my distinct writing style as “Amberisms,” an inside joke that, unfortunately, many people outside my brain struggle to grasp the brilliance of, leading to their untimely demise in the editing process.

Lisa: I have a tendency to edit as I write, like, from the start. So I’m in a constant state of honing in on the writing from the very start. I circle around each phrase until it’s in a fairly final form. While our writing styles were different, I feel like I learned so much from Amber and we ended up with a great project.

What drew you to the time period that you write about?

Lisa: Because the book was the result of a God prompted moment, Amber had the vision from the beginning to include multiple current voices. Right now was the perfect time.

Describe your book in five words.

Lisa: Inspirational, Raw, Intriguing, Motivational and interaction

What is your work schedule like when you’re writing?

Lisa: I’m involved in several things outside of writing, so I have to really schedule. I find that if I don’t set aside specific time to do it, it gets delayed and I start to feel pressured.

Are you a plotter or a pantser?

I am truly both, and I write about that in my personal chapter in the Leading Ladies book! Since childhood I have done well with checking off a list and keeping things in orderly fashion, however…I am creative at heart, so I do have moments of sheer unplanned spontaneity. The pull between the two caused me much stress growing up. As an adult I’ve been able to rest in the fact that our creator does all things well. I don’t necessarily have to be either this way or that way. Our Father can work with either/or and BOTH.

Do you have a favorite or special place to write?

Lisa: I do appreciate uninterrupted solitude and a big comfy chair.

What are your hobbies?

Lisa: I’m a crafty girl so I’m always making or revamping something! Right now I’m loom knitting scarves and hats for my GrandBabes. I love spending time with my family and travel.

What is your favorite book?

Lisa: To Kill A Mockingbird/Harper Lee

Do you prefer traditional books, ebooks, or audiobooks?

Lisa: I like traditional books. The feel of them in my hands and the turn of the pages help me to settle in. But I also love the ease of a digital copy you can pull up on your device with ease.

Amber: As a writer and reader, I actually prefer audiobooks. It allows me to multitask, especially when driving, and enhances my overall retention.

Do you have a favorite Bible verse, or is there a particular Bible story that really resonates with you?

Amber: My favorite Bible verse is Romans 4:17-18. It resonates with the theme of our book, highlighting Abraham’s trust in God’s ability to bring life from death and create something out of nothing. It reflects the message of hope and faith that I aim to convey.

Is there a particular literary period that you’re drawn to (Regency, Victorian, Romantic, Modernism, etc.)? Why?

Lisa: My personal favorite genre is historical fiction so I’m prone to anything of the Modernist and Victorian literary period. It’s a wonderful way to place yourself in a different time period and get lost in someone else’s story. I treat it like a get-away, or a bit of self-care.

If you could meet one author, living or passed, who would it be?

Lisa: Maya Angelou…What she lived through, her ability to overcome and move on, leaving us with such eloquent yet raw writings…I have been profoundly moved by her.

What advice would you give to aspiring writers?

Amber: In writing, there are no “Golden Calves.” Never stop learning the craft, keep growing, and continue writing only if it’s for an audience of one. The key is to persevere and maintain a genuine passion for the art of storytelling.

War Songs Author Interview and GIVEAWAY!

About the Book

zrO1heZJA

Book: War Songs

Author: Brett Nelson

Genre: Contemporary Christian Fiction/Spiritual Warfare

Release Date: February 6, 2022

Trigger Warning: WAR SONGS is free of profanity and sexual situations (There is some mild slang terminology spoken by fallen angels and certain human characters, ex: c**p, w**re, etc). Also, there is one short scene in the book that depicts violence with very minimal graphic details that could be triggering and/or upsetting for some readers.

There is an invisible realm around us that we can neither discern with our eyes nor hear with our ears. This invisible realm is where the powers of darkness and light reside. They can see and hear us, but we cannot see and hear them.

Jenner Alekson is a leader in his praise and worship band that travels extensively in the tri-state area of Cape Kennington, North Carolina. He makes little money in his chosen profession, yet the rewards he reaps in obedience to his call of ministry are eternal, and that’s enough for him.

Always happy with all aspects of his existence, Jenner is blindsided when his life suddenly catapults into turmoil, and he is thrust into a crossroads where discontentment, anger, and loss of desire to carry the gospel with his song takes root in an otherwise sheltered and stable life.

Unbeknownst to Jenner, his wife Hyacinth, and best friends Camden and Lucas, a spiritual war rages around them. The powers of darkness will try their best to derail Jenner’s spiritual walk, his marriage, his ministry, then ultimately his life.

Meanwhile across the country, rough and gruff long-haul trucker Arnold Collins leads a different kind of life. He’s a recovering drunk who chases women and is unhappy with an unloving, belligerent wife who could out-cuss any man who ever dared to challenge her. Without a warm and inviting place to call home, Arnold prefers the wide-open road before him.

As he rumbles across the terrain of small-town America one lonely night in his eighteen-wheeler, grumbling about his unfulfilling lot in life, he happens upon a radio preacher. Not interested in religion, he flips past the station with mutters of disdain, but for reasons he cannot explain, he is compelled back to it and hears a sermon he doesn’t understand but can’t get out of his mind.

Will the schemes of the powers of darkness pull Jenner away from the faith that means everything to him? And will the same powers prevent Arnold from finding the faith he needs but never wanted?

Heaven and Earth, light and dark, good and evil, are about to collide in ways Jenner and Arnold and those they love could never imagine.

About the Author

zNWmodBog

Brett Nelson is an Amazon TOP 5 BEST-SELLING author. “When Raindrops Fall” and “War Songs” hit #4 and #2 respectively in the Christian fiction genre, and “A Christmas to Live For” hit #9 in Christian Fiction. He lives in Arkansas, where he was born and raised. He wrote his first novel in 2012, just to see if he could. His goal is to write stories of fiction that are clean, easy to read, fun, and that injects a layer of his faith into every novel. In short, he desires that his readers would finish every novel having experienced a tapestry of emotions from a good healthy cry, fits of amused laughter, soul-splitting inspiration, and everything in between. He has published five novels to date. Book #2 to “War Songs” will publish in Spring 2024, and he is also currently working on Book #2 for “When Raindrops Fall.”

His novel “A Christmas to Live For” won the Readers’ Favorite Gold Medal in Christian Fiction in 2021, and “War Songs” won the Global Book Awards Silver Medal in Christian Fiction in 2022.

Other than writing, reading is one of his favorite things to do on a lazy, rainy day (or a sunny day, or at the beach, or…well, you get the picture).

He enjoys reading the novels of lesser known authors, because you never know when you’ll uncover a new favorite.

More from Brett

“War Songs” was my fourth published novel, and I wrote it because I love books about spiritual warfare. The few that I’ve read, though, lean more on the occultic side than biblically based, which was what I wanted. Spiritual warfare isn’t pictures falling off walls for no reason, or seeing a shadow in the corner, or things that go bump in the night, which is how books that I’ve read tend to depict the subject of spiritual warfare. So, I decided to tackle the subject for myself and write a novel that I would want to read. I’m blessed to have received amazing email feedback about the book from all over the country and even from readers in Pakistan, Germany, the UK, and Canada.

One question that I’m asked a lot is how I came up with the unique angel and demon names (ex: Animi, Mataio, Roga, and Mortol, just to name a few.) In the book, I gave each demon a specific job and/or specialty (discouragement, anger, etc) then I researched the Hebrew/Greek root words for the emotions that the demons represented and created a name based off the root word. It made for some great demon names, even if I do say so myself.

As an author, I rarely use the names of people I personally know in my books. I like to use unique character names that no one in my life has, hence the names of my main characters in “War Songs,” Jenner and Hyacinth. To help find character names, I often go to baby name websites and search until just the right unique name comes along, and the minute I see it, I just know that will be the character’s name. That said, I have given a few special people in my life a shoutout in the books by using their name for a smaller secondary character then giving the character an outlandish personality that is nothing like the person whose name I used.

Author Interview

Are you a plotter or a pantser?

Sarah – Thank you for inviting me onto your blog.

I’m not as rigorous of a plotter as some writers, but New York Times Best-Selling inspirational author Katherine Spencer gave me a little friendly advice once when I asked about how she combats writer’s block, and I’ve always kept her answer in mind. She said something like this: “If you find yourself constantly getting stuck in your plot and don’t know where to take it, then you’re not plotting your book well enough BEFORE you start writing.” I’ve learned that it’s among the best advice a writer can receive.

There are two types of authors: Plotters and Pantsers. Plotters plot every aspect of their book before they start writing. As they write they don’t have to stop and think for long periods of time about what’s coming next because they’ve taken the time to plot properly.

Pantsers, on the other hand, “fly by the seat of their pants.” They don’t plot and make up their story as they go.

For me, I land somewhere between plotting and pantsing. I’m not as vigorous with plotting as some but before I start a new novel, I like to know how the story starts, how it will end, and all the major plot points I want to hit throughout the story. I also want to know all subplots and how they will eventually weave into the main story.

It takes a lot of time to plot before you start writing, but it really does speed up the writing process and reduces the risk of a major writer’s block down the road. It’s my goal to become a better plotter.

Do you have a favorite or special place to write?

I typically write from home, though I love today’s technology that allows authors to write from anywhere. I live in the South, which means it’s too brutally hot for nine months out of the year or too cold for two months out of the year for comfortable outdoor writing, so most of my writing happens indoors.

I’ve tried writing from a local coffee shops/other small businesses a few times, and I took my laptop to the beach once and once on a cruise, thinking that the change of scenery would be a cool way to invigorate my creativity Plus, there’s the whole Hallmarky feeling of writing in a quaint local coffee shop, don’t you think? I found, though, that none of that worked for me.

In the coffee shop, there was just too much chatter and the constant flow of customers coming in and out. I found out quickly that busy public places aren’t ideal for me. I need a quiet space to write that’s free of distraction. At the beach and on the cruise, I was on much-needed vacations and there was, again, too much distraction to get considerable writing done. I finally realized that my mind needed the vacations and the mental downtime more than I needed to write a few pages.

So, in short, writing from home is where all the magic happens for me.

Describe your book in five words.

Oh, goodness. Do you know how difficult it is to describe a book in five words? But I’m up to the challenge. The five words I would use to describe War Songs is:

1)            Spiritual Warfare (okay, that’s TWO words, but I don’t know how that say that in only one word). I’ve had so many people, especially at in-person author events, who think War Songs sounds like an interesting premise yet they’re nervous to read it because it’s spiritual warfare. I don’t totally understand the hesitation of Christians to read spiritual warfare books. As Christians, we’re best equipped to handle what the enemy throws at us if we understand how it operates. For some reason, people seem to think that spiritual warfare is a type of horror book since it contains angels and especially fallen angels (aka: demons). Once I explain that its not a horror book and what it really is, most people are excited to pick it up and give it a try. So, for anyone on the fence, give it a try! War Songs is a family drama and most Christians, male or female, would enjoy it, I think.

2)            Drama, but not in an overdramatic way. It’s a family drama that focuses on a worship leader in a non-famous regional worship band. Jenner loves worshipping God through music, yet he finds himself in a season of discontent which impacts his behavior and attitude in sometimes negative ways. Unbeknownst to him, he is under a spiritual attack. In War Songs, he and the other characters don’t get to see what is happening around them in the spiritual realm, but readers get to watch as the spiritual realm interacts with the humans in the physical realm.

3)            Salty – Arnold and Alice are secondary characters in War Songs, and unlike Jenner and his wife Hyacinth who are Christians, Arnold and Alice are not. They are in a crumbling marriage and are more than a little snippy and “salty” with each other. Alice is bitter and wants nothing to do with religion, but Arnold finds himself drawn to it in subtle ways and he finds himself questioning why he suddenly wants to believe in God but can’t. A series of events and people are instrumental in drawing him in. (NOTE: Book Two in the War Songs series will publish in Spring of 2024, and it focuses on Alice and Arnold and why are the way they are. It’s a dual timeline novel that splits between their lives in the current day and flashback to their lives in the early 70s).

4)            Relevant – War Songs is relevant to today’s Christians because more than ever it is pertinent that we be aware of the schemes of our enemy (Satan). Time is getting short. The Lord is calling us home soon, and Satan and his evil army knows it. I don’t want to be “one of those people” who thinks that everything bad that happens to us happens because Satan did it or because we’re under spiritual attack. We must be careful not to give Satan too much credit for the bad things that happen in our life. Sometimes God allows bad things to happen to us—we may not always understand, but He’s always in control and knows what He’s doing even when we don’t (think of Job in the Bible). Sometimes bad things happen to us because of poor decisions we make. Sometimes bad things happen because we live in a fallen world, and God never said that we Christians would be immune from bad things happening. We also need to understand that there is a spiritual realm that operates around us. Discernment is crucial in all aspects of a believers’ life.

5)            Accurate to scripture. I’ve read a couple of spiritual warfare books written by smaller, no-name authors, and I was very unimpressed with their books because of the way they portrayed spiritual warfare. It’s not things that go bump in the night, like pictures falling off the wall for no reason or shadows flickering across the room but nothing is there when you turn to look. That’s an occultic version of spiritual warfare. Since I find the topic of spiritual warfare interesting but couldn’t find anything worth reading, I decided to write one myself that aligned more with what scripture says it is. To be clear, I do take some literary license in writing certain scenarios (hierarchy in the spiritual realm, and how angels and demons interact with humans) because the amount of information available to us in the Bible is limited. I did my best to write it in a way that aligns with Biblical precepts as I understand them, but as with anything, some scenarios may require readers to keep an open mind and remember that with fiction novels, even Christian Fiction, authors usually take certain liberties to propel a book forward and make it more interesting. At the end of the day, I wanted to give readers a thought provoking and entertaining read.

Do you prefer traditional books, ebooks, or audiobooks?

It kind of depends. For my very favorite authors whose books I collect (Mary Higgins Clark, Katherine Spencer, John Grisham, etc) I like to read hardback books. In general, I’ve always preferred physical books, but I’ve learned to appreciate eBooks, and for the past few years I’ve actually read more eBooks than physical books.

I like eBooks because I enjoy reading Indy authors and trying new-to-me authors, and eBooks are a great way to do that because, for one thing, eBooks are usually cheaper, so it’s not a huge drain on my finances if I shell out a few bucks on an author I’ve never read and end up not caring for the book. Also, I tend to read several books a month and I just don’t have enough storage to accommodate the volume of books I read in a month’s time, so eBooks take up a lot less shelf space.

As for audiobooks, I’ve tried them but I’m not a fan. My mind can’t concentrate on them, and I wind up listening to the same chapters over and over because my mind wanders. Plus, I’ve never listened to an audiobook where I enjoyed the narrator’s voice. The only way I can enjoy an audiobook is if I read a physical book along with it, which defeats the purpose of an audiobook. But, who knows. Maybe with time I’ll grow into a fondness for them like I did for eBooks.

If you could live inside a book, which one would it be?

If I could live inside a book series, it would be Katherine Spencer’s Cape Light series. It is an inspirational series that takes place in a small coastal Village called Cape Light. I love the atmosphere of the coastal village and the characters are charming. I would love to live there.

What advice would you give to aspiring writers?

For aspiring authors who want to write a book, the biggest piece of advice I could give is to stop procrastinating, and just do it. Stop wondering if you can, and just do it. Honestly, you’ll never know if you can write a book until you sit down and try.

I would recommend finding some writer’s conferences. They can be time and financial investments for an author, but I’ve learned so much, both from the writing aspect and from the business side of things, at conferences. If an author is serious about writing, especially if you want to make it a career, it’s an investment worth making.

Also, there are lots of free resources on YouTube where you can get great writing information. As with anything on social media, you have to be careful who you follow and listen to because not everyone who releases a video is as much of an expert as they want you to think they are, so use discretion. I also recommend doing online research. Go to Google and type in “how to be a better writer” and other similar searches. You can find great articles on things you should eliminate from your writing, or things you should start doing, in your work to make it better.

Finally, this will sound like a crazy piece of advice, but it has helped me so much with improving my own writing, at least from the technical aspect. Read non-popular, no-name Indy authors’ books and take notice of any writing styles that annoy you (the more of them you read, the more of their annoying writing styles will pop out at you) and then don’t make the same mistakes in your own books. (The things that annoy me in Indy authors’ work, traditionally published, popular authors also make the same mistakes, so no one is immune). The weird thing is, the things that annoy me, I used to make the same mistakes in my own books, but they didn’t annoy me until I started recognizing it in everyone else’s work. Strange, right?

Some of the things that annoy me in novels are: character’s constantly rolling their eyes (because if a character rolls their eyes once in a book, it’ll happen fifty times in the same book), overuse of passive voice (eliminating this one thing from your prose will make it flow SO MUCH BETTER and sound so much less amateur), overuse of adverbs (rookie mistake that even famous authors make), overuse of exclamation points (exclamation points should be used very sparingly in your novel (like no more than once, or twice tops. Instead of exclamation points, use your words to convey emotion!!!), characters constantly laughing at things that aren’t funny, and character’s constantly smiling (authors often make characters laugh or smile to give them an action to perform and/or to break up the dialogue. Like eye rolling, this can become an annoying redundancy when overused, so find more ways than laughing or smiling to give your characters an action to perform.

More from Marguerite

My audio book experience.

Do you enjoy audio books? They have become special companions since I now work at home. My first experience with audio books involved cassettes on long road trips which morphed into CDs. I would purchase the ones I knew I could listen to again or pass on to someone else. The library became a source to fulfill my burgeoning habit.

It took me a while to consider audible books as a “reading” endeavor. But when I really thought about it, I changed my mind. As I listen, I am challenged with new and old vocabulary words where I must deduce the meaning from the context. My concentration is zeroed in on the story unless I miss some strategic details similar to straying on a page and not knowing what is going on. I have the same euphoric reaction as the plot unfolds.

Now, I’m never without an audio book. When I was offered the opportunity to have Labor of Love presented in audio format, my heart quivered knowing what joy it could bring to readers while doing housework, caring for loved ones, or relaxing in a comfy chair. I hope you enjoy this format as much as I do.

Happy reading!

Author Interview

What is your work schedule like when you’re writing?

Before I start writing, I have put in months of research since most of my novels are historical. I also have an outline. Then I am ready to write. I work fulltime as an online teacher so I do not have full days to write. I treat my writing as a job. I set aside 2-3 hours a day to write. I have a daily word count goal and a monthly word count goal. It is very important that I stay on task and reach my goals. I can write 30,000 -50,000 words a month.

Do you have a favorite or special place to write?

I have an old square table that faces a big window where I have access to all my notes and research books. I have plenty of room for a lamp, a candle, and my papers. I write out my novels on paper so I need room to spread out and get comfortable.

Which one of your characters speaks most to your heart? Why?

In Labor of Love, Ana, the main character, touches my heart as a woman who has dreams but circumstances prevent her from fulfilling them at the present. She enjoys the outdoors, the simple beauty of the gardens. Family is important to her even though hers is very dysfunctional. Her life is controlled by many other people, placing her in situations that she are not of her choosing. She’s obedient to the earthly authority but longs to follow God’s path.

What are your hobbies?

I am a constant traveler as I’m always planning a trip whether to a local state park or to Europe. Also, I love to walk or hike in the woods, mountains, cities, and the beach. My main hobby is reading!!

What advice would you give to aspiring writers?

Write no matter what. Even if the writer is never published, keep writing. For me, I cannot stop writing whether I publish it now, later, or never. If writing is a part of someone’s life, writers should not be discouraged. Continue to learn, write, study, research, and write some more.

Book: Biblical Finances Jesus Christ: The Financial Advisor

Author: Lisa D. Pedriel

Genre: Christian, Christian living, Finance, Wealth Management

Release Date: May 3, 2023

The objective of this book is to help readers manage their finances using biblical standards and principles. The main benefit of doing this is that our finances will be built on a sure foundation (Isaiah 33:6), which is our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and His Word. Jesus is concerned about every aspect of our lives, and the management of our finances is no exception. Throughout His Word, He gives us advice on how to get and manage the wealth He has made available to us. Therefore, it is imperative that we study the scriptures and apply them to our lives and finances. In summary, this book looks at wealth and finances from a biblical perspective.

Author Interview

Describe your book in five words.

Finances from a biblical perspective.

Do you have a favorite or special place to write?

In my room, it is an escape from the world. A place where I can gather my thoughts and be at peace to write.

Do you prefer traditional books, ebooks, or audiobooks?

Traditional books by far. I love the smell which can be a new book or an old book scent.  Also, the ability to turn the pages with your fingers. It may sound funny, but I believe you get a deeper connection with a traditional book than with any other form.

Do you have a favorite Bible verse, or is there a particular Bible story that really resonates with you?

As an intercessor and lover of prayer it must be Colossians 4:2 “Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.”

What advice would you give to aspiring writers?

You can do all things through Christ who strengthens you. Just do it, ignore the little voice in your head which says you will not make it. With God all things are possible.
